Syphon Filter 2
Reviewed by Greatest One
Syphon Filter was one of the best games ever released for
the playstation. The intense action and cool storyline made
it an immediate favorite. The ending hinted at a sequel and
lo and behold, we have Syphon Filter 2. SF2 is essentially
the same game which advances the original story. It is
highly recommended that you play SF1 before this because
there are a lot of references to the first game. The basic
story of SF2 is that Lian Xing (playable) has been infected
by the Syphon Filter virus and is dying. The only way to
save her is to get the antidote from the agency. Thus, both
Gabe and Lian are now fighting against the agency to save
Lian's life. The gameplay is exactly the same as Syphon
Filter with the popular targeting system intact. There are a
lot more movies in this game than the first one. The story
may seem a bit boring but that is because of the difficulty
of the game. SF2 is a lot harder than SF1. Thus a level
needs to be played many times to be finished. Also SF2 seems
to be a lot more about stealth. There are just a handful of
levels where you can kill everyone.
A good addition to this game is the multiplayer mode.
Although it is not as good as Goldeneye, it is still a lot
of fun. I wish that you had more options though, especially
choosing the weapons. After unlocking everyone, there are a
lot of characters to pick from including some from Syphon
Filter 1 such as Girdeaux and Rhoemer. The levels are pretty
cool too, but the lack of control over the weapons choice
make some of them unfair. Still it is a lot of fun. Overall
Syphon Filter 2 is a very good game that makes you look
forward to Syphon Filter 3.
Graphics: 8.
Almost the same as the first one. Multiplayer does suffer
from some slowdown and the fmv scenes could have been
better.
Sound: 9.
I loved the music in the game. It made you feel like you
were watching an action movie. The sound effects are cool
and some multiplayer characters have their individual
speeches.
Gameplay: 8.
The control is a little sloppy. The 180 turn sometimes
occurs when you don't want it too. But, other than that it
is the same as SF1.
Replay Value: 9.
A lot more than SF1 as there are tons of stuff to unlock.
Multiplayer will extend the playing time of this game.
Overall: 8 out of 10
I gave SF1 a 9. Since this game is just advances the story
and doesn't offer anything new besides multiplayer, I give it an 8.
