Street Sk8er 2
Reviewed by Aristotle
I really wish I could stop making comparisons with Street
Sk8er 2 to the ultimate of all skateboarding games ever
made (Tony Hawk), but alas, this is not possible. I mean,
one look at this game and you can tell that it is a far cry
back in time from Tony Hawk. It tries to duplicate almost
every aspect of Tony Hawk there is. And yes, I mean tries.
As in, fails horribly. My main complaint of SS2 is that the
controls are so horrible, as I am used to the controls in
Tony Hawk, I literally couldn't play the game. There was
something wrong with grinding that if you?d jump into a
grind, ollie and try to do a nosegrind, you would go into a
method and hold it, crashing. This, in my opinion, was
absolutely unforgivable. And also with grinding (which is my
favorite part of Tony Hawk), if you are going too slow, the
game automatically jumps you out of the grind. So that means
none of these Rail 2 Rail 2 Rail 2 Rail transfers like in
THPS. I will jump out of a grind when I am ready, thank you
very much!!! These horrid little controller issues of SS2
bring the score down to about a one.
Let's take a look at the visuals. Correct me if I'm wrong,
but shouldn't you be able to tell if a structure is a ramp
or a wall? Isn't that just a little important? Very, because
you crash if you skate into a wall. And this is very
expensive, considering that you lose points when you crash.
Anyway, the graphics have a dull, washed-out look to them.
Tony Hawk's graphics are much, much better than this garbage
that looks like it was thrown together in three minutes. And
for some reason, these cra*py graphics actually cause
slowdown on the system!
The audio was half good, half bad. The sounds sounded very
lifelike, from the skating of boards to grinding, to
crashes, the sounds were great. But the music??! Let me
clarify something here: before you start playing a course,
you get to choose the soundtrack you want. But when the game
starts, there is no music. What is up with that?????
The game is not all bad, though. It has a ton of courses
that are very lifelike. All almost completely skateable.
They also have a lot of skaters, too, with stats able to be
maxed out (just like you-know-what!).
And then comes the biggest feature, the Park Editor. Not
anything as good as THPS2, the park editor mode in SS2 is
still good, nonetheless. You have a bunch of pieces that you
can use to build a skate park. You also have unlimited
pieces. But be careful, because too many pieces will create
unbearable slowdown.
The replay value is so bad I don't even want to talk about
it. The control issues completely annihilate any chances of
this game's replay value. I played it once, not even beating
it, and then threw it in my closet for the past year.
Replayability = atrocious.
