Street Fighter Alpha 3
Reviewed by Dyson Turner
I was blind but now I SEE! All these years I have been blind
to the newer Street Fighter's the Alpha's the Street Fighter
EX Plus's X-men street fighter crossovers. For some reason
an old street fighter fan such as myself decided to put down
his shoryuken and relive his 16 bit days. Then one day on a
whim I picked up Street Fighter alpha 3, and quite frankly
folks this is one of the best games I ever played. I thought
I wouldn't like but the similarities to this and the older
street fighters are pretty close. First off all my favorite
characters and some new ones i have warmed up to are in it.
The 2D graphics that I hold dearly in a fighting game are
hear the phenomenal backgrounds the story everything was
here, and I was loving it. As soon as I picked up the
controller selected ken and ent through Arcade mode with the
sound on my television really high to generate the arcade
feel I knew this was for real. This would be an excellent
game that I still find hard to put down. This is a definite
game that I liked since round one, until the closing credits
and the Thanks for playing screen.
Visuals 10/10
For the time this game was established these graphics were
very close to what the arcade version was. Except for the
backgrounds which could of been a pinch better they weren't
as colorful or vibrant as the arcade's were. They were
lackluster and dull, but for the main character or popular
stages they looked very close. The character design was
large it reminded me of the size of the 16-bit versions but
the characters ere way more detailed than that. You can see
the little things going on still although some of those have
been removed. Some of the things that go on in the
background aren't distracting I fount it more so to be true
in arcade street fighters. The special moves and super
combos look pretty good too, I can't say real because most
things are impossible for humans to do. The graphics were
overall awesome on this arcade to home port.
Audio 9. 0/10
The music was decent but some stages the music use to be
better. When I remember the 16-bit versions od Street
Fighter Ken's music as awesome no it is one of the worst
ones up there, but that's not a major problem. I think some
characters like Ryu's music sounded excellent and heroic
same goes for Akuma and Charlie. The sound effects were
remarkable as well, and they really came off well.
Especially the choices they were arcade crisp the thunderous
chants that each person called came out of the speakers
greatly. The music didn't overpower the sound effects which
I liked everything sort of stand on its own, even though
sound effects won't play much of a factor when you are
bashing away at a local sf rivalry. Overall the sound music
and voices all played a key roll in this game and helped
make it as good as it is.
Game Play 10/10
This game is for 1 or 2 players. You have several ordinary
modes but you also have some hidden modes which you will
have to unlock and figure out. There is Arcade mode, which
is exactly like the arcade you battle 9 characters you get a
bio at the beginning and a little story on the 5th and 9th
character. Then you face M. Bison, the fun here is limited.
Then you have vs. mode, which is a battle between you and a
human or non-human controlled friend to see where your
skills are at against a live opponent. The next mode is
Practice this is where you can practice your combo's normal
and custom against and uncontrolled opponent so you will be
ready for the other modes. The last mode is something
totally different called World tour. Here you have to fight
with no story and you gain experience on your ism's . Which
is a pretty neat idea in my opinion also if you get to a
certain level it is possible to unlock even more secrets.
This in my opinion is a test of skills. Something that I
fount cool was the ism's there is 3 of them. Vism is a
Variable where you can do custom combos. Custom combos are
where a shadow follows behind you and mimics your attack
which hits the enemy twice, these are easy to do but your
timing has to be precise because of your shadow gets hit it
counts as you getting hit. You can only perform certain
moves with certain characters in this mode. you have Xism
which is for beginners, you can perform most of the moves
but only one super combo in this mode and it only charges
once. Finally you have Aism you can perform usually all of
your super combos under this and most of the moves. This is
the recommended ism for and one who has experience with this
game. Difficulty is adjustable and there is a save feature.
Overall 10 out of 10
This is a very fun street fighter game. I don't recommend it
if you never picked up street fighter in your life but if
you have some experience playing any of the earlier or later
version then this is definitely for you. it has a lot of
characters to choose from but most importantly all the cool
ones are here all 16 of them. So you will have a blast
playing it and it's the type of game that you can pick up on
a rainy day and have some fun with. The replay value is
pretty high for those who want to unlock all the game
secrets, and want to beat it with all or most of the
characters. The Fun Factor is really high you and a friend
can literally burn ours playing this wonderful and addictive
games. Everything in this game despite its age adds up to a
winner in my books. I certainly advise this for any fighting
fan that want to add a great game to his gaming library.
