RPG Maker
Reviewed by Greatest One
Ever since I heard of the game, RPG Maker, I have been
excited about it. The possibilities are endless. You can
create any idea of a story you may have or you may even
re-create stories from past RPGs or movies. If you love RPGs
and don't mind bad graphics this is the game for you.
The game is divided into two sections- System Data and
Scenario Data. System Data is the place where you construct
the look of your RPG. This is where you create the dungeons,
towns, etc. to be used in your RPG. You can even pick from a
wide variety of character models to be your main characters.
You also make your spells and items here.
To make a character, you pick what he looks like, give him a
name, pick the weapons he uses, pick what spell he learns at
what level, determine the increments his stats increase with
every level and more. The possibilities are vast. You can
make upto 15 playable characters.
In the item edit, you can make upto 250 items for use in
your RPG. You pick what these items are. They can range from
weapons, armors and shields to potions, cures and foods. You
decide what the name of these items are going to be and what
they will do once used.
The spell edit lets you create your own spells. You can pick
the graphics from 30 different graphic choices and mix and
match them in 3 different frames of animation. You can even
change the effects of the spells in each frame and decide
what sound effect goes with it. You get to name your spells
and decide what effect they have. You also can make special
attacks here which use up HP instead of MP.
In the monster edit, you make the monsters that appear in
the game. You determine what they look like by picking from
99 different models and determine their statistics. You also
determine how much experience and money they give you and
also what treasures they leave behind.
In the system edit, you can also determine what all your
parameters are called. You can change the names of HP, MP
and others to whatever you want. Here you also pick the
title of your RPG.
The scenario edit is the mode where you make your RPG come
to life. Here you input all the text in the game. This part
is tedious as you have to use the controller to enter every
letter. But its not as bad as it seems. You also can make
cutscenes, add non playable characters to your towns, set
boss battles and a whole lot more. If I try to list all the
possibilities, I would never stop typing.
There is also a feature in the game called Anime Maker. This
allows you to create your own character models or monster
models and title screens. This mode is extremely hard to use
with the controller, but a PS Mouse could make it very interesting.
Overall, I would reccomend this game to any RPG lover and
anyone with a creative mind.
Graphics: 4.
The graphics are pretty bad, but that is to be expected due
to the other features in the game. They look like the
graphics from the 16-bit RPGs, but aren't that bad. They
should definitely not be a factor in your decision to buy
the game.
Sound: 8.
There are a lot of sound effect and music samples to choose
from to use in your RPG. While they are not great, most of
them are good RPG tunes. The sound effects are pretty good too.
Gameplay: 7.
You need patience to play this game. The manual is vague and
doesn't explain much. To get the desired effects, you'll
have to do them using trial and error or ask for help. But,
once you get the hang of it, it is very cool and a lot of
fun to see your creations.
Replay Value: 10.
If I could give a score higher than 10, I would. The choices
are endless. It seems like the Dex Drive was made for this
game. You can now play an unlimited amount of RPGs from
creators around the world. If you don't already own a dex, I
would suggest getting one now.
Overall: 9 out of 10
This game is great for RPG lovers. There are some minor
flaws, but still this game is a highly reccomended buy.
