Road Rash 3D
Reviewed by Jeremy Peeples
Road Rash 3D was released in June of 1998 for the Sony
Playstation. Many fans of the Road Rash series hoped that
this game would continue the legacy of the series,
unfortunately, it falls short in many areas.
Graphics-4/10- The graphics are rather disappointing, the
character models are original, but they are pretty blocky.
The weapons look OK, they aren't too blocky. Everything in
this game looks blocky and has a rushed look to it, many
things (like the cars) are a little washed out. The game
moves at a choppy rate, everything comes off slower than it
should. Overall, they are bad, they are too blocky and
washed out, the only good part is that a few things (like
the road) have a solid look to them.
Sound-10/10- The sound in this game is excellent; the music
(done by Kid Rock and Sugar Ray among others) is great, it
fits the game's mood perfectly. The sound effects are great,
the weapons sound like they should. Overall, the sound is
perfect, sound-wise everything fits the game like it should.
Control-7/10- The controls are a big of a mixed bag, on one
hand they are responsive to some things (like turning) and
on the other they are sluggish (i. e. attacking your
opponents). For the most part though, they are good, the
sluggishnes (is that even a word?) of attacking is minor and
doesn't really affect gameplay too much.
Gameplay-7/10- This game offers you the basic modes of teh
series, the usual conquer-all-areas type-mode and the new
story mode (a. k. a. Big Game mode). The modes fit the game
nicely, none of them seem out of place. The game also moves
at a slower pace than the other Road Rash games, it's not
nearly as exciting as it should be. The biggest let-down
though, is the lack of any kind of a multi-player mode, this
is a big deal in this game because the multi-player modes in
the other games in the series added so much to the
experience, some of the Road Rash spirit is lost without
one. Overll, the gameplay is great, the lack of a
multi-plater mode is a huge let-down though.
Replay Value-6/10- The lack of a 2-player mode hurts this
aspect significantly, you can only play the 1-player modes
so many times before they get stale.
Presentation-10/10- This game retains the off-the-wall
persentation of it predecessors, everything has an
exaggerated look to it. Overall, perfect.
Overall-6/10- The choppy graphics and lack of a 2-player
mode hurt this game immensly. The sound is great, and for
the most part, so is the control, but it just doesn't feel
like a Road Rash game, it's too choppy.
