Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
Reviewed by Dyson Turner
Resident Evil 3 delivers!!! A great story better graphics
and so many surprises keep fans of the entire series hanging
on for more. Though in my opinion not the best in the
series, and certainly not a 'true' sequel to RE2 it stands
alone as a great game. Graphically sound wise and just
overall game play leads to a quite perfect game, despite the
other critics this game is practically flawless. My small
and only gripe with this game is the fact that you only get
one character and that's Jill. There are other characters in
the game and it would be cool if you could use them like in
the original RE where you had the choice of either Jill or
Chris. Well despite this fact the game is good.
Story 10/10
It seems to be right after the events of the first RE. You
are Jill Valentine she is trying to find a way out of
Raccoon City because it's over ran with zombies. The police
couldn't stop them, the military couldn't either it's up to
you and you only to stop these zombies. You also meet some
other interesting characters like Carlos, Mikhail and this
other guy I forgot his name. You also learn that everyone is
supposed to leave town and that's what the mercenaries, come
into game, seemingly their idea but was it? Overall the
story is different than the other two versions and it goes
through several different plot twists, and keeps to the RE flair.
Graphics 10/10
Jill Valentine is back and she looks better than ever!! The
zombies look better too than the other 2 versions; they seem
to move a little faster and with more enthusiasm. When you
shoot them you better believe there going down. With some
realistic looking background everything seems almost like
your there in Raccoon City. Every small detail from writing
on the walls and cracks in the pavement. That is if you look
very close at everything, you can even walk or run up and
down the stairs and you have full control instead of having
the game do it for you and you run right into a zombie. It's
all there and beautifully done. These truly are some of the
best graphics I seen in the entire series including the N64 version.
Sound 10/10
Ominous quiet music plays throughout the game, then at some
points no music at all. The moan of the zombies and
Nemesis's famous quote 's TARS' is present. This is one
thing I loved about every RE the music, even though it was
barely there it added to the chill factor, especially in
your first play through. Even if it isn't it still kind of
scares you if you are playing this one at night. Nemesis
popped up every where and when you heard the music hanged
and his roar it really scared you. The sound FX are
realistic as well just like the rest of the series. The
distinctive sound of each gun, from the hand guns to the
rocket launcher. Even the knife sounds authentic when you
hear it cutting the air. Some parts of the game had music,
well the usual parts did such as the Save rooms, and I liked
the fact they kept the old RE2 Police Station music. It
really had me surprised, I wish their was other RE landmarks
though. The silence at times gets spooky and is usually a
hint that Nemesis or hordes of zombies are coming. Overall
this game is ear and eye candy and is a pleasure to watch
and listen.
Game Play 10/10
This game is for one player only. You are Jill Valentine you
come equipped with a Mac-11 if you play it on beginner. You
have to work your way through small buildings and streets.
Which is a welcome change of pace from the older games where
you were confined to the police station and mansion. You get
a bevy of weapons including knife, handgun, magnum, and
rocket launcher, shot gun and some other good ones. You also
have new maneuvers to help you avoid zombies like the 180
degree turn and the ability to push zombies away. You can
also now shoot barrels by locking on them with the R2
button. You can also use R2 for direct hits, which are more
precise than in older ones. By adding these new features in
my opinion it makes the game more user friendly, and easier
for new comers to the series. You still have the same
ribbon, typewriter save feature, which was present in the
other games. You also have a new quick response question,
this usually comes up before each Nemesis fight, and there
are 3 different outcomes, which lends a huge help to the
replay ability. Nemesis is a great villain but he still
doesn't compare to Tyrant, it seemed as though he was
mindless and someone else was behind him. Anyway you also
have new ammo system. You can create you own ammo with gun
powder different combinations lead to new and better
bullets, especially ones that are rare like fire rounds and
Magnum bullets. I think this is good, because it adds a
since the use of your mind to the game. There was always the
time when we would find regular rounds, and wish they were
for the shotgun, or for the grenade launcher. When you start
doing it a lot and if you play in the normal mode, you will
get upgraded bullets for your shotgun and handgun. They are
more powerful but you don't get as many as you would if you
made regular bullets. Most of the time I just turn the
gunpowder in to regular bullets anyway, because all that
stuff isn't necessary. This isn't really needed because this
game has an overwhelming amount of bullets, only a foul can
be out of ammo by the end of this game. I liked the police
station best of all I thought it would be exactly like the
one from RE2 because the camera views and the music. I also
liked the little inside jokes when you tried to light the
picture over the fireplace and it wouldn't let you. This
also leads to speculation to when the events of this game
really took place. You have 2 different difficulties to
choose from, beginner and normal. Normal is for the experts
and you got goodies every time you defeat Nemesis. The dual
shock adds and helps you in this fright fest. You can since
Nemesis is behind you and each time you pop a zombie the
controller helps you feel you put more into it. Beginner is
for the new comers, you don't get all the things you get if
you play in normal. You can save your game.
Overall 10 out of 10
This is a definitely one of the coolest games ever. With all
the new features and the good story line which answers a lot
of questions from the previous versions. This game basically
has it all, and I really don't have any problems wit hit at
all. The replay ability is high since there is something to
do after you beat it; I won't ruin it for you here. Even
though this game is hard it, is the easiest out of all the 3
editions of this game. Any one who was an expert at the past
two Resident Evil's will blow through this one in a weekend,
but this does not guarantee you'll find out all of this
game's many secrets in just one play through. There are
plenty of things to do and even after you beat it you still
wouldn't be bored. There is plenty more to find out. The
coolest part of this game would be where you get to go back
in the Police Station, with all the same camera views and
music from the RE2. This game is really strange and I can't
wait for Re4 maybe that will be a sequel to RE2, then RE5
will be a sequel to it all. This series defined the word
survival Horror I mean without it we would be playing whimpy
zombie games, and survival games like the ones seen on Sega
CD. Followers of this series this game is a must have. New
comers might not want to start with this one since you
probably wouldn't know what was going on, if your just here
for the gore than welcome aboard!
