Parasite Eve has been dubbed, ÒThe Cinematic RPG. Ó Once you
play the game, it is obvious why. The great graphics and the
interesting story could have been mistaken for an animated
feature film. The game is set in New York City, where due to
mysterious circumstances, people have started to burst into
flames. No one can explain why this is happening, but the
answer may lie with a particular opera singer who is around
all the incidents. One person is unaffected by this
phenomenon and it is New York City cop, Aya Brea. You take
the role of Aya and try to stop the madness, while figuring
out why you are unaffected by this happening.
Parasite Eve seems to be a cross between Final Fantasy and
Resident Evil. This is because the battle system is similar
to Final Fantasy. As you walk across the screen, you are
randomly transported to battle. The battle is similar to
Final Fantasy, where you take turns to attack. You have to
upgrade weapons just like in Final Fantasy and you also have
a few spells at your disposal. The enemies are freaky
looking monsters which remind you of Resident Evil. Some of
the fmvs are similar too as they show the transformations of
these monsters.
Parasite Eve also has its weak points. The story of the game
isn't very deep or complex unlike other RPG's. Also the
weapons are all guns, which do different amounts of damage.
There are only a few spells, so the battles get boring soon.
Also you can play as only Aya, which makes it feel more like
an adventure game than an RPG.
But, these shortcomings aside, Parasite Eve is a pretty good
game, and makes Parasite Eve 2 eagerly anticipated.
Graphics: 9.
The graphics are awesome. They remind you of Final Fantasy
VIII. The surroundings and the fmvs are very pretty too.
Sound: 7.
The sound isn't really impressive. It is supposed to be a
scary game, but the music isn't spooky enough. Also some
places lack enough sound, such as the streets of New York
which seem too quiet.
Gameplay: 7.
Very similar to Final Fantasy. The final boss is too easy to
make it seem like a last boss. Some areas can get pretty
frustrating.
Replay Value: 7.
There is an extra place to explore the second time around,
but it isn't really that great. Once you beat the game,
there isn't much more to find out.
Overall: 7 out of 10
With some improvements, it could have been a really great
game. Instead, it is just a good game.
