NHL '98
Reviewed by Greatest One
Hockey, along with baseball are my two favorite sports.
Thus, hockey games are my favorite sports games. Hockey is a
very fast and action packed sport with tons of excitement.
NHL 98 brings all these elements to the table to become a
pretty good game.
NHL 98 has all the teams till 1998 and up to date
rosters (1998). It also has the two all star teams and a
bunch of national teams. The game plays fast and smooth and
delivers the fun and excitement of hockey nicely. You can
set all the rules or play without them. Personally, playing
without the icing, two line pass and offside rules are the
most fun, as it prevents frequent stoppages of play. Two
player is a lot of fun.
There is a pretty good season mode in NHL 98. You pick your
team and take them through the gruelling NHL regular season.
Team and individual stats are tracked throughout the year
and into the playoffs. Eventually, the winner is crowned the
Stanley Cup champions, and if you are the lucky team, you
get to see a Stanley Cup video. You can trade players and
sign free agents to make your team better.
There is a decent create a player in the game. Create
yourself and decide what position you play, your height,
weight, jersey no. etc. Distribute ability points to make
yourself the perfect player. NHL 98 is a good jockey game
and provides fun even now.
Graphics: 7.
Graphics are decent. You can see the players' skating
motions and reactions when hit perfectly. All the arenas are
present and look good.
Sound: 8.
The sound effects are nice and there is good commentary. The
commentary can get behind the action sometimes, though.
Gameplay: 7.
It is a lot of fun, but the computer AI isn't too high. Even
in hard mode, it can be tough scoring goals, but I usually
outshoot the computer around 70 to 10.
Replay Value: 8.
Season mode isn't too great, but two player mode is pretty fun.
Overall: 8 out of 10
A good hockey game.
