NBA ShootOut '98
Reviewed by Dyson Turner
Well this game wasn't bad, but it seemed to be an in
complete B-Ball sim marred by shotty controls and
unbeleavable players. When can John Stockton ever block Big
Shaq's Monster Dunk? Only in Shootout '98.
Visuals 7. 5/10
The graphics weren't bad but are horrible when compared to
NBA Live '98. The sprite size is small compared to that and
I don't think you can zoom in and make the sprites appear
bigger so your stuck with 14th row view of the court. The
faces looked nothing like the real players not even i nthe
pictures, everybody resembled Gary Payton, well not
everybody but most did.
Audio 8. 0/10
Some Realistic basketball sounds fill the air. You do hear
an ugh from the players when they get fouled and different
reactions from the crowd help out the game. They would boo
when the away team scored cheer for the home team and
sometimes you would hear mixed reaction's if the home team
foul too much some times they would boo them which I found
innovative and new. The music that played during the intro
and option screen's was pretty good as well.
Game Play 6. 5/10
This game was for 1 to 4 players. You had your usual modes
associated with PSX B-Ball sims. Their was create your own
player, season, exhibition, and playoffs. Unlike in the Live
Series where you can make super human players with all 99
stats, that isn't so here, every thing must be even or only
a few stats can be high. I say keep the FG and Inside
scoring and even out the rest that is all you really need,
because it is rather simple to block shots and makes steals.
I should know because I average about 30 blocks a game. That
is always a b-ball sim problem one defensw of aspect is very
hard in one version, then in the next version its easy, and
now something else is hard to do. Some of the players really
don' live up to their stats either, for some reason almost
any center can shut Shaq down when we all know he should be
unstoppable unless you have a created player with solid
defense on him. Kobe Bryant can nail 3 pointers like Larry
Bird which is very unrealistic. Too many statictic flaws
destroyed this game as well.
Overall 7.0 out of 10
Even though a lot of flaws really hamper this game it
doesn't totally destroy it either. This game is and always
will be very fun with two players, you can battle back and
forth since it is very easy to block if you don't block
almost anybody can nail jumpers so this game is fast and
furious. If B-Balls the sport and you had your fill of NBA
Live, this is the next best thing.
