NBA Live '97
Reviewed by Dyson Turner
NBA Live '97 was a big improvement over the PSX version of
Live '96 and it was acclaimed the best version of live at
the time and it still is up there as one of the better ones.
It really showed off what the PSX could do with B-Ball sims
and it stood out in front of the competition.
Visuals 8. 5/10
Huge 3D characters and beautifully done basketball court is
what you locked your eyes on when your first popped this
into the old PSX. Players really resemble their real life
counterparts greatly. The net looks funny when the ball goes
through it very non realistic, but other than that everything
else is fine.
Audio 9. 0/10
Some great NBA Live music played during the opening screen
and the options. Which was a nice change of pace from last
years barf fest. Some realistic sounds accompanied you on
the court like the arena announcer and the squeaking of
sneakers in the paint and the admiration of the fans. The
sound did well with the graphics.
Game Play 9. 5/10
This game was for 1 to 4 players. You had all 29 NBA and
most of those the Players were missing. Most noticeable 2
Shaq and MJ. The Shaq replacement is good but he isn't as
good as Shaq, and neither is the MJ replacement. You had
your typical NBA game options, which are now expected in NBA
Sims. You had your typical season, playoffs, and exhibition,
plus 4 created teams. You only had one cross over but it is
a good simple and effective one. It looks much like Tim
Hardaway's UTEP 2-Step and just about as effective as it is
too. You had a nice array of dunks your usual hanging off
the rim monster dunk your fancy dunks like the 360, and then
their was good ol' regular dunks, and the easy lay-up as
well. This games easy point would have to be rebounds, like
NBA Live 2000 I can get 40-70 rebounds in one game on both
side of the ball. The A. I. was a joke much like earlier NBA
Live's was. This game did have memory card save which took I
think 4 blocks to save the season.
Overall 9 out of 10
All though out shined out classed out every thing by NBA
Live '98, you have to say this revolutionize the way NBA
Live was going to be over the next years. Hopefully more
Live's will follow in the tradition of this one and all the
sequels, if you don't have any Live's and you want to pick
up on the first one's I would suggest this one.
