Mortal Kombat 4
Reviewed by Greatest One
When the Sega-Genesis came out, the hottest video game was
Mortal Kombat. It was the first video game to be mired in
controversy. Kids loved it, but parents and teachers wanted
to ban it. Thankfully, MK survived and has shown up in the Playstation.
The 4th installment boasts all new 3d graphics and the
ability to use weapons. It also has a new bad guy in
Shinnok. Most of the MK favorites are back, including a few
new ones. The story is similar to the other versions, with
Shinnok trying to take over earth, while Raiden gathers the
mortals to help protect it. We also see the possible
retirement of Raiden in this game.
Because of the 3d graphics, the game looks better than ever.
You can really see what happens in the fatalities and they
look pretty gruesome. Another nice addition to the game is
the cinematic endings for each character. Since Shan Tsung
is no longer in the game, Shinnok takes over the
transforming duties. He can transform into any character,
but his appearance doesn't show it.
Each character now has the ability to use a weapon. Specific
weapons are designated to different characters and they can
use them in battle. Fighters can also pick up rocks lying
around and hurl them at their oponents. Each character has
two individual fatalities, and two level based fatalities.
No more beastialities, babalities, brutalities or
friendships like MK Trilogy.
Fans of Mortal Kombat will like this game, as it is the
first 3D MK game. Others, probably would rather check out Tekken 3.
Graphics: 8.
A vast improvement from the 2D times. The fatalities look
awesome and the character models are a lot better.
Sound: 8.
Similar sound as other versions, except it is in CD quality.
The soundtarck is pretty good too.
Gameplay: 7.
The moves require pretty quick fingers to pull off. Once you
get the hang of the game, the computer is no match for you.
Replay Value: 9.
It is fun to play with every character, just to see his
cinematic ending. It is pretty cool how Sonya's, Jax's and
Jarek's endings are connected.
Overall: 8 out of 10
Fans of Mortal Kombat will love it. But, there are better
fighters in the market today.
