Mortal Kombat 2
Reviewed by Dyson Turner
Mortal Kombat II is a nice and most complete Japanese import
of the game. This game has been out of print for a long time
and it is extremely rare. It also the best arcade to home
import of Mortal Kombat II. This game had everything down to
a tee, Graphics sound, game play all the juggles and combos
every finish move and every secret made it to this version.
For the Mortal Kombat II enthusiast who doesn't have this in
their arcade any more this game feels just like it. The
movement the characters everything seems just as perfect as
it was going to get. Only a few flaws were in this game but
none really jumped out at me, and most things didn't hamper
the game play. My first impression of this was Wow! This is
a perfect arcade port of the game, and one of the best I
have ever seen. With a joy stick controller this game
perfectly felt like the arcade the graphics the intro music
everything about it was truly sensational this is a definite
game that I loved.
Story 9. 0/10
The epic story of this game was truly a remarkable one and
one of the best of the series. After Liu Kang won the
original Mortal Kombat Tournament by killing Goro, and
defeating the powerful Shang Tsung. Shang Tsung's master
Shao Khan decided to hold his own tournament in the outer
world. He was not having Shang Tsung in charge but he had
him in the tournament as a warrior. To make up for his
previous mistakes, Shao Khan wanted to open the gates from
the outer world to Earth, and the Earth Warriors had to stop
him. Everyone entered the tournament for their own reasons,
some to stop him, some for the fame and some to try and help
Shao Khan's cause. Even though this story is pretty much
like any other fighting game where the last unplayable
character is trying to destroy the world or take it over I
liked it. I was wondering how they would continue the series
and this is a grand way to do so.
Visuals 10/10
These graphics were absolutely arcade perfect, this is the
absolute best Arcade port of the game, and it's a real gem
as well. All the characters are the exact same size they
were in the arcade and moved the same way as well. They all
showed an incredible amount of detail and had a lot of
character to them. I particularly like how they did the pit
stages and some of the backgrounds they really went all out
to grab every minor detail and make this look as much like
the arcade version as possible. All the warriors looked
almost exactly like they did in the arcades, the way they
move cell by cell and frame by frame looked just like the
arcade. It had the same feel and look, this game in my
opinion looks better than the Trilogy one, because all the
graphics and characters are focused on the same thing. The
blood and fatalities looked truly excellent and make no
mistake about it they certainly put a lot of effort into
making this look like the arcade. The whole graphical
department was phenomenal and truly great, I have to give
credit where it is do in making this the most complete
looking arcade port.
Audio 10/10
The music in this game was great, from the opening music as
the title screen rolls it was all great and some of the best
I ever heard. It boomed loudly in stereo just like if the
game was in the arcade. The voices of finish Him and Shao
Khan all sounded great even the unrealistic high screams
that were in the arcade and 16-bit home systems sounded
great and very authentic. This game inside and out was hands
down the best, and my favorite of all. The music was so dark
and deep it really took its tolled, it really made you think
and had you feeling like you were back in the arcade's with
this one. The bone shattering sound effects were truly
great, all the hits and smacks and small things going on the
background made every thing worth it. When you uppercutted
someone in to the acid poll you heard that same sizzling
sound from the arcades to make it sound almost perfect. The
sound effects blend right in with the music and everything
was intone and just sounded crystal clear. Truly this music
is a blast and very dark and deep and helps you with those
long fights. The whole musical and graphical department was
outstanding and made this game wonderful.
Game Play 8. 0/10
This game is for one or two players. And this is the part of
the review where things get hairy. Ok, I'll start with its
strong points this game does have all the arcade combos and
juggles. All the arcade fatalities and all the arcade
special moves, essentially this is a near perfect arcade
import. One small problem I didn't think about when I got
this. I was a great master of every character of the game,
and when you had every ones special move memorize who better
to pick that Shang Tsung? Well, wrong Shang Tsung because of
the loading of the game you have a 3 to 5 second lag between
morphs, this is a huge problem. Especially if you are in a
heated battle and you need to turn into Sub-Zero quickly to
get some cheap freezes in. Back in the arcade I got simply
morph into someone like Sub-zero very quickly and my
opponent wouldn't have time to think of an attack now they
do. If you aren't a profound master of Shang Tsung then this
is a small and trivial problem, but if you are then this can
severely hamper your MKII experience. Other than the Shang
Tsung morphs there aren't any major problems with this game
in fact this is an excellent game if you don't consider that
fact into it. The difficulty is adjustable and this game
takes one block of memory.
Fun Factor High
The Fun factor on this game is particularly high, and this
game is a blast to play with friends. You really can get
into deep with this one; the fatalities if you haven't
played it or it was your first time were always fun trying,
and trying to perfect.
Replay Value High
The Replay Value like the fun factor was pretty high.
Usually on fighting games it isn't but this is a fighting
game I would definitely want to watch everyone's individual
endings because the fact is there aren't any boring characters.
Overall 10 out of 10
Well, even though Shang Tsung's morph fell victim to loading
times, it hampers the game a lot but there are so many good
factors that I can easily look over. The only remedy to it
is to either don't use Shang Tsung or don't use his morphs.
Basically this game is well rounded with arcade quality in
the looks and hearing department, and great game play, all
the combos and everything which the rest of the home
versions decided to skip out on. This is easily the best
home version of the game and the only one rivaling this one
is the Sega Saturn version, and I suggest you get that one
since this one is very rare. Overall this is an excellent
game that should have made it to the states.
