MLB 2000
Reviewed by Dyson Turner
MLB 2000 was good but it had its flaws. Some of these flaws
were prevalent as soon as you popped it into your
Playstation while others ate away at you when you delve
deeper into game play. But the average baseball fan that
picked this up on the whim will not even care about them.
The game is pretty solid, the graphics are smooth and the
commentary and sound effects are pretty good. There is only
a few fields in this game that are really lagging behind,
and what made it fall back in the field of baseball SIMMs.
Although I have to say up front that this is way better than
the 99 MLB it just didn't provide the fun and long term use.
Replay value was low so don't expect unless this is
unbelievably the only Playstation game you want to being
playing a full season in it.
Visuals 9/10
Well the graphics were great but I have seen better when
this came out in '99. Some things jus needed to be improved
the very flat and detail less fans could of used some work,
the fields were lacking the colors that made the stadiums
look less life like. Although a lot of things were thrown in
to make it seem more real, some obvious like Shea Stadium's
Homerun Apple, and the back drop of Wrigley Field. The
player size was too enormous, players who in real life were
about 6'3 were almost to the top of the screen, and some of
the lesser-known batters used stances that they didn't use
in real life. Which should some of the rushes that were put
into the game. Although top caliber players used their real
stances which is a breath of fresh air. The out field
players all ran funny in my opinion they didn't move like
real players were suppose, to their strides were just too
long to resemble real running. The pitching as well also
look awkward but i will give them this much credit it did
look realistic, and all the odd pitching stances and
releases were thrown in. Overall the graphics were pretty
decent and I really had no complaints with it.
Audio 8. 5/10
Well there are some minor problems from day one in the audio
section. No matter ho soft the ball was hit it always gave
you that home run pop. Which was kind of annoying especially
if you hit a weak pop fly. The commentary by Vin Scully and
Dave Campbell was well boring. These guys can put you asleep
in a minute, but at least they didn't mention any stupid
fake ads like the guys from Triple Play. The audience pops
were pretty realistic the large boos you would get when you
came to plate after hitting homerun was inspiring to cram
down another homerun. The few fight songs the fans did bang
out was pretty good, and good if you were home. Some of the
commentary was interesting and the guys did keep up with the
action quite well. Overall the Audio section wasn't great
but I heard worst.
Game Play 6. 5/10
This is where it turns ugly. It has been said a thousand
times but I will say it again. It's far too easy to hit a
homerun. Just grab a decent hitter, who has a 85+ hitting
power and slam them out of the park, no realism whatsoever.
It doesn't even matter how difficult you put the game it
could be on a very low difficulty level or a high one and
you will get the same result. The game does boost the normal
modes that other baseball sims of 99 did. Like Season
Playoffs Homerun Derby and several rosters options like Free
Agency Trades a create a player. All of this is good but
this one has a different mode called Spring Training. This
does add to the realism you have to create a player and he
has to earn his stats, through doing well in the game to
first make the team. Once he makes the team then you have to
try and get him into the all-star game. This at times did
seem like fun because you always had to make sure you had a
decent at bat.
This game boost three things Total Control Hitting, Total
Control Pitching and Total Control Fielding all of which did
add to the game. The Hitting was you could actually
deteremine where you would put the ball in to the field and
the power behind it. This had it's ups and down since it
worked on a lock o system you had to guess where the pitch
would be. It was easier than you think when you see that it
locked on turn on the Power and Slam it over the Left Field
wall. It was that easy if you had a weak hitter even a
pitcher could find the outfield gap and get an easy Single.
Then there are other problems, like over rated players. One
of these was being Mark Mcgwire. He was great 70 homeruns
but he was pathetic on defense he didn't warrant a perfect
rating. When other players who were on defense who were much
better like Derek Jeter didn't get a perfect 99. These were
also too many perfect 99 players at least 2 at every field
position and 6 starting pitchers. You could create a perfect
and dominate the whole game. This game was caught up in the
home run hype of 98 and that's the key to some of these
imperfections. Baseball is about hitting and strategies not
have 2-hour innings because you hit every ball pitched. The
difficulty was adjustable and this took up to 8 blocks of memory.
Overall 7 out of 10
Although a fun game it was missing too many key factors
which keep sports games fresh and interesting. The Fun
Factor is pretty low at times you will get your self strike
out on purpose just to keep the game close. Ith the easy
homeruns this also lowers the replay value of the game
considerably considering the fact close games with friends
or the usually wants you to keep hopping back,
after you fiddle with the options destroy a few teams you
won't be jumping back any time soon. The graphic sound and
improvements are the only thing that give this a good
rating, other than that you have a boring time.
