Grand Theft Auto
Reviewed by Dyson Turner
Grand Theft Auto despite what it looks like is a very good
game. This is what I and many like me always dreamed of a
game where you can do mob like damage seal cars and run from
the cops it doesn't get any sweeter than this. The best
thing about this game is the facts that you can shoot
people, blow up buildings and carry out jobs for your mob
bosses. It really doesn't have a story, you just do all the
mobs dirty work, and some times they send you out for fun.
My first impression on this was 'Is this a PSX game?' It
sure didn't look like it but once I got into it I wasn't
putting this one down by a long shot. The graphics may have
been cra* but this doesn't hurt the game enough in my
opinion. The game was real, fast as well, which also drawn
me to it. This game received much heat and was banned in
some states, and it's obvious why. The violence even though
cartoony and there is more violence in the Survival Horror
games than this but stealing cars and being chased by cops
shouldn't be in video games. But, for those who love to
steal cars and shoot people then this is what you been waiting for.
Graphics 4. 0/10
Quite frankly, the graphics on this were pretty bad. The
character size was real small, and the graphics were 2D. Not
saying that I didn't like 2D graphics but they could have
been better than this. The cars did fiction cars did
resembled their real life counterparts, and you could tell
what they were. Most building looked the same and you had to
use some like the police station or a hospital as a
landmark. The camera was also bad because you really
couldn't see that far in front of you. This was a severe
problem when you had 5-0 on your tail with a dented ride.
Next thing you know there's cops blasting you and you car
may explode. Some part like every time you complete a level
you would get a cartoon like picture of your boss and his
lips would move, it looked pretty good and it was a nice
change of pace to what the rest of the game looked like.
Overall these graphics fall low of PSX standards, but it
didn't hinder the game much.
Sound 9. 0/10
Depends on what music CD you put in, if you got something
good then the music is a blast. Just put a CD in after you
start the game, even though you can't pick a track it's a
blast. Or you can opt to have the regular old GTA sound
tracks some of them are good and some are funny. Each car
has a different track or a different part of the track.
Which is always good listening. The sound effects are pretty
good too, with a few explosions and cursing passer byers.
You also get phones ringing and over urban street sounds.
The only annoying part of this game is the part where the
cops are talking when you're being chased. He will keep
mispronouncing every street in the game. He will keep
repeating it over and over to the point where you'll get
yourself arrested just so he would shut up. Other than that
the majority of the sounds on this game do quite well and
they are a huge help for the graphic department to make up
for it.
Game Play 10/10
This game is for one player only. You get 4 different guys
to chose from; I usually take the default guy since there is
no difference on who you chose. You start your mission in
'Gangsta Bang' This is probably the easiest place In the
game but its not too much fun when you play it for a while.
Your main objective through out this game is to answer
phones; this will lead you to a job. There is a small arrow
on the screen, which shows you in the direction where you
have to go. This arrow is a lot of helps, and can save you a
lot in this game. Even though at first before you learn the
controls, you will think its all about stealing a nice car
and running people over it is not. The best way to play is
steal a fast car and just follow orders. Usually every job
except for small jobs where you have to pick some one up
usually end in bloodshed or the cops after you so you want
to save all your skills for when you have to get away. There
is a little meter on top of the screen, which has police
heads. One Police after you is probably nothing, and you
won't have to worry, commit mass murder or too much
recklessness and you'll have four. This is something you
should try to avoid at all cost considering the fact that
you'll have more after you when you're trying to complete a
mission. The difficulty on this game is hard, and there is a
memory card save which takes one block.
Oevrall 8 out of 10
This is a very good game, even though the graphics stink it
is still well rounded. All the other fun you can get into
surely makes up for the bad graphics and other problem
areas. Many people shunned this game and others consider it
great. It all depends on how much you like crime, it's
always more fun to be the bad guy anyway. The fun factor is
through the roof even though its only one player, you and a
friend can take turns and have a load of fun trying to get
through the missions. The replay value is medium, even
though seemingly theirs the same missions over and over
there are secrets in this game and non mandatory missions
which are always fun to come back to. Unless you are on the
right side of the law don't get this game, the rest of us should.
