Final Fantasy IX
Reviewed by Dyson Turner
Final Fantasy IX is just as legendary as it may sound. This
9th installment in the timeless series is among the best
installment and last we will see from the Playstation. It
had everything in it to make it an excellent game, plot
twist great graphics and great sound. I loved the system and
the game and just about everything else. Everything was top
notch and really wasn't getting better. My first impression
that as the opening FMV's played I knew I was in for an
instant classic a game that many like myself would cherish.
The graphics the sound everything was a treat for the eyes
the FMV's surpassed even the so-called best like Legend of Dragoon.
Video 10/10
These graphics are truly some of the best I seen on
Playstation all the characters all the backgrounds the
enemies everything was as good as it gets. The dwarf
characters looked well than I expected, I thought they
wouldn't look good at all and look a lot like the ones from
FF7. These characters are around that size but more
detailed. The enchanting backgrounds were as good as they
were to get, they weren't as dark as the other two PSX FF's
they were a little brighter, and resembled the earlier games
in the series. The bosses and just plain enemies looked
great they all had detail and was mostly the same enemies
from the other games, just redone to look better. You will
recognize a lot of the enemies from the other games, which
is a good thing. Especially the bosses all of them are nice
sized but highly detailed and truly some of the best bosses
I witnessed. The FMV sequences are out of this world, they
look so fluidly realistic it is astounding, these make even
the best FMV's look crude which is quite hard o believe even
great FMV from the previous games don't look as good as
this. Graphically this game is enough to win me over but it
doesn't stop here.
Audio 9. 5/10
The music in this game was some of the best I ever heard as
well, even though some of the classic tunes aren't here, and
have been replaced by newer ones it is still all good. He
theme during the main part of the game and the town themes
were all great and kept you humming after you played it.
Even though some of it not original and some of the music
like from the earlier FF's I would of liked brought back and
re mastered isn't prevalent here. The music score is still
awesome, and it is still some of the best music on the
Playstation right next to the other FF games. The sound
effects go perfectly with the rest of the music in this
game, all these things combined are just outstanding and
truly great. The battle theme and winning fanfare, though
not the old ones is still good and a treat to listen to it
is some of the best music I ever heard and this game like
the previous would make a good soundtrack. My main gripe
here is there should have been more classic tunes.
Game Play 10/10
This game is for 1 player only. The junction system is dead
and many game fans stomp on its hard and difficult to get
soul. The new systems is much more user friendly and easier
to get the hang of. Let me explain the newer
system, basically everyone was born with an ability. Some
characters can use magic other can't which is like FF6 a
little bit. You learn new techniques and magic and things
through your weapons. If you equip a weapon it teaches you a
new ability through good ol' Ability Points from all the
over previous Final Fantasy games, when you max out, you
learn that ability. This is also means no more making your
own weapons from refuse of a monster. Sounds a lot like FF6
without the Espers when you think about it. Some things have
returned like 4 characters at once this was long over due,
and I forgot how helpful having four characters use to be.
Many people already know that about the airship in this
game, it's the old type of airship, which looks more like a
boat. Some newer things have been added as always there are
side quests, which are fun and not mandatory but they help
boost the old replaying value a tad bit. I think that this
new system for gaining abilities and magic is sort of a rip
off or combination of old ideas although the weapon ability
is sort of fresh. The difficulty is intermediate this game
can give you a challenge if you don't know Japanese. This
game is Mod chip protected so you will need a Japanese
Playstation to play it on.
Overall 10 out of 10
Final Fantasy IX is upon its very promising to us. Although
only in Japanese unless you know a great deal of Japanese
you will not know what is going on, you can gather major
details though. Also I think the replay value really sells
this game, there are some side quest you can do which are
always fun. The fun factor is high too this is a game you
can definitely have fun with and is fun to go through, it
posses the same qualities that Final Fantasy VII had. There
are hardly any visible flaws in this game at all; I had a
blast playing through it and doing things even though I
didn't understand much. I think this will be last true
sequel until Final Fantasy explores online its ashamed
though this game really did cap off an excellent series and
one of the best series ever. If you have some understanding
of Japanese and can't wait for the American release by all
means you will need to get this game, and I highly suggest
it and you will be in for an excellent adventure.
