Final Fantasy 6
Reviewed by Dyson Turner
Why does so many people like this cra*. Final Fantasy 6 in
my opinion now that I have played it more is pretty
horrific. It is in my opinion the worst Final Fantasy ever
made it was phenomenally bad. When it came out the graphics
and sound were good I'm not ripping those but the story was
just so boring and the magic system was a joke. I mean to
sit here and play through this mind numbing garbage really
gets me more and more aggravated. Then they remade this
horrific game for Playstation? This is unbelievable in my
opinion because of the simple fact that it reeked. It reeked
on so many levels how about the boring characters. How about
the cheesy story line how about everybody looked dumb and
the villain was the worst.
Now when I first played it seemed interesting it seem like
it had promise but then I delved deeper and deeper and found
this game more hollow tedious and boring. How about the fact
that you have like 14 party members? That alone goes to show
you how really bad the game is. With that many people you
can't really focus in on any of them and most of them were
fringe. Normally an RPG is bound to have one uneventful and
boring character or a character who is bad at fighting but
you are intrigued by this story. Sadly 3 characters only
intrigued me and none of these were the main character. See
that's the part that pissed me off the main character
sucked, Terra was a bad idea. Surface she seemed cool but in
reality she was not plus there is the fact that many would
argue this game had no true main character.
How can a game have no main character? That's just a bad
idea anyway you look at it because then the game seems
direction less. Which this game seemed like in my opinion
could have been better it ended up not living up to the
potential or the hype then and now. I mean this game is ok
and all but I wouldn't call it the best game of all time
like some have. I wouldn't even call it a good RPG and in my
opinion I do not know why everyone got so and are still so
hopped up over the story. Or the 'intriguing game play'.
Let me break it down for you there are nothing about the
game play that makes up for the game. The Esper system and
the abilities weren't that much of a unique idea. There have
been plenty of games to use unique abilities for each character.
Maybe having an esper was unique but then that in a way made
the abilities worthless. If you give each character the best
Espers in the game then level them all up with them everyone
is about the same so then that negates the abilities. These
problems and more that are even more rancid are thrown
through out the game. This game is just bad, but then again
it had its good point. Sabin Blitz's rocked on a certain
level and I guess Shadow and Interceptor rocked too. But two
characters out of a billion that are in this game certainly
do not make up for the rest of this suck-athon. This game
really was bad and doesn't really suggest anyone out there buying it.
Story 3. 1/10
Well this story was pretty bad but I heard worst the gist of it is.
There was the war of the magi. After the war all magic has
left the world, and magic is now only myth and legend. The
Empire and organization that basically runs the world now
wants the power of magic. They kidnap a young girl who is
said to be born using magic. They take the girl on an
escapade to find an Esper that was rumored to be in a cave.
They find the Esper and they realize that magic isn't myth
and they want to harness the power for themselves. BORING!
That story is really bad, and I'm shocked by the good people
at Square to even come up with such a stupid story. Although
this story keeps points for the fact that it does have plot
twist later on.
I really didn't care much for the story or the idea behind
it. In my opinion the story was weak. The plot twists were
easily seen coming and nothing shocked me. When I play an
RPG I like to be shocked by the foredooming events and not
easily see them coming. Then there is the fact that the game
just doesn't live up to my expectations. As an avid video
game consumer I felt dissatisfied by the events that
occurred. I felt that there wasn't enough support on the
additional characters. Then the additional characters
weren't good and they contributed nothing positive to the
events that would happen to the main characters. So in my
opinion I feel as though if they won't support the main
characters why are they even there?
Overall the story had only a few good points. Only a couple
of great plot twist that surprised or intrigued me. But in
my opinion this was the weakest story ever in a Final
Fantasy game. Final Fantasy is known for it's great stories
and I'm sad to say that this one just didn't live up to the
hype. Every other Final Fantasy or every other RPG I played
period previous to this ones original release date had a far
more interesting story. Better characters and more overall
since of self insurance by the characters. The characters
that were the least bit interesting got barely any time, or
focus. The story was focus in on the main character Terra so
much that it made me ill. She was the most uninteresting
main character or even as a female lead in RPG history.
Graphics 6. 0/10
I can consider this on two levels. Number one when this game
first came out in the RPG World these graphics were top
notch. But I can consider it on another level when this game
got re-released for Playstation these graphics was sub
standards. The 3 FMV videos make up for the lack of good
graphics. Not the graphics were character design was done
pretty good I look the look of the characters on the game,
but the enemies in my opinion could of got some work. Plus
you got the RPG notorious townspeople swap. They reuse the
same townspeople too many times every town you would see the
same people over and over and in my opinion this wasn't a
good thing. With a game that is suppose to be more advance
than other RPG's you would think they wouldn't have to
resort to such tactics.
The FMV's in the game are truly outstanding. They look a lot
like the ones seen on Final Fantasy VIII. But in my opinion
these seem a tad bit better, you at least get a feel for
what is going on in the game. Then you get a better
appreciation of what the characters looked like. This may be
the one of the few good points of the game on playstation.
Is the fact that Square was smart enough to make FMV's for
this. The FMV's really enhance the game and without them
this game is pretty much graphical cra* in my opinion. Even
though this really isn't a playstation game and it came out
for SNES I don't care when it's re-released it's
re-released. So it went out again in this market. It wasn't
all that good back then in my opinion either everything in
other genres were easily better than this. Even though it
was a great looking RPG I wasn't all that impressed by it.
Overall if it weren't for the FMV's I would have rated it
lower. Even though FMV's aren't actual game they are in the
game and that is what matter the battle scenes the world map
and everything else look like garbage. Even the '3-D'
chocobo ride looks like garbage. Compared to what was out
when this game came out it looked horribly cheesy, and it
just wasn't up to standard. Well it did have a few good
points I did like the cutesy look of the Summons, I missed
the way old summons look because I was warped with the
graphics hog of this games sequels. Well any way even though
they just made the game a CD I really think they should of
improved the graphics or made the character look better or anything.
Sound 8. 0/10
Well the cheesy Midi's faired better than the graphics. At
least although they are still Midi's they sounded more
digital like they were remastered from the original version.
But I have to say that here they at least tried to make it
sound better to improve on the original game. It sounded
pretty decent if you ask me it came off great and sounded
great. But then again it's still just a midi and it isn't up
to today's standards in terms of anything. Even though some
of these songs are classical in terms of the Final Fantasy
series they just weren't good enough. When they came out
however these songs were the best and they really were done well.
Some of the songs that stick out in my head as good is the
world map theme, the battle won theme and the chocobo theme.
A few of the themes your heard in some of the towns were as
well equally good or at least comparable in terms of
everything compared to what you heard else where. Even to
this day I have to admit that these are some classical RPG
tunes. The actual music came off good and was good to listen
to. But even so I didn't hacve complaints of the actual
music when it came out I had complaints because it sounded
old and tired that was my main beef with it. Overall though
some of the good midi's make up for the overall sound.
The sound effects were as cheesy and as old SNES as
possible, just lam explosions maybe a few sword clashes and
that's a huge maybe. The sounds on this game are very
uninteresting and so normal and basic compared to the rest
of the market. That also hampered the game a lot in my
opinion, and didn't make this game as interesting as the
game could be. Better sound in my opinion overall equals a
better game, and you always want your game to be better than
this is. Overall the sounds hindered the music, but some of
the songs were good and redone well.
Game Play 2. 5/10
This game is for 2 players. Well its 2 players during the
battle scenes other than that it is really just one player.
The magic system in this game is the Esper system. The idea
was that at a certain point of the game you would get
Espers. When you equipped an esper to one of your characters
through ability points they would lean new magic spells.
Each esper had a rate of learning some were better than
others, some learned certain spells faster than other
espers. Depends on which esper you equipped to what
character. Also Espers worked like Summons you can summon
the Esper into battle and you could use it, to take out
enemies. But you could only summon an esper once not any
more so only use it as a last ditch effort.
Also every character in Final Fantasy VI had ability. Some
of these abilities were born in some were learned later on
in the character life. It didn't matter what happen or what
esper you used the character would never lose these
abilities. Some of the abilities were cool like Sabin's
Blitz or Shadow's throw. Some were not cool like Gau's enemy
attacks, it sounds cooler than it really is. The abilities
came in handy at the beginning of the game, but after a
while when you got a lot of powerful espers and magic you
didn't even need to bother with the espers. That in my
opinion was flaw that messed up the game. Which I will get
into later on in my usual fashion.
The game as a whole playing it was interesting. Interesting
in a bad way there was so many design flaws in the game when
you played it you will easily see them. Some of these are
the insanely high random encounter rate. I mean when you are
on the world map two steps and you meet an enemy. This
really annoyed me and a lot of other players of the game,
this really was annoying especially when you were getting
into a groove of the game. When you were trying to make it a
town to save because you were out of tent bam you're dead
before you get there. This got annoying especially if you
were absent-minded and didn't save yet.
Then there was the controls on the game, I think they were
too sluggish. The game had a very poor response rate after
playing the original version f this the controls were rather
quick and responded sometimes you had to press the button a
few times just to get some sort of response out of it. This
in my opinion got real annoying real quick. Also there was
the fact that the chocobo riding was annoying. I mean it's
cool renting a chocobo and avoiding random battles but the
awful want to be 3D looking ride it was really hard to
see exactly where you were at when you were on a chocobo. 9
out of 10 times I didn't know what was going on and this got
to be quite a bother.
Then since this game came into the pack with Final Fantasy V
you got a little extra incentive to make this game more
appealing. Because Square realize since this had already
been available in the states for quite sometimes that no one
would really want to play it again. Despite the 3 FMV's you
had more 'bonuses' some actually I have to admit came in
handy with actually playing the game. First off you could
view the games 'many' FMV's . You could also view scenes
from them, which was all right I guess. Also besides that
you could view photos of the game that were being designed.
Not just the still from the videos you got hand drawing and
the like.
The cool part of this feature was the fact that you could
view the game bestiary it gave you tips for beating the
regular monsters and the bosses as well. Not real in-depth
tips just a basic small strategy on the enemy, and it's
elements and the such. This was quite help when or if you
didn't have access to the Internet or a guide to see actual
FAQ's on the monster or the boss. But it didn't help that
much it was just some basic background tips on the monster
and nothing more in-depth than that. Although it wasn't too
in-depth I have to saty it was still cool to look at and it
helped me and that is the main focus of it. There was also
other things you could view in bonuses but I will not
discuss those because that would be spoiling for you.
Overall as I look at the game play it had a lot of flaws in
it. Some were more obvious as other as an actual player of
the game. There was the fact that the game had too many
characters. Also I despise the fact that the game had
weapons for the characters in every shop you went into.
Although there is a lot of RPGs that had a lot of weapons
but this one over did it. You don't need new weapons in
every friggin town, and the monsters outside the town are no
different than the ones you fought outside the previous
town. Plus the weapons didn't do much to improve anything.
Also this game made it hard to level up since the monsters
in the game were pretty weak and the bosses were massively
strong. They gave you next to no Exp when you defeated them.
Also the game was pretty dang difficult. Hands down this had
to be next to FF5 the hardest Final Fantasy ever made. I had
a very difficult time in every section of the game no matter
what or where the game in my opinion tended to be too hard
too difficult too long. Games are meant for the young to
enjoy, so since the game was hard to get through you had to
do a lot for leveling up just to get to the next area. As
the game got into the later parts you might have not gotten
access to the easier enemies and common enemies were strong
enough to defeat you. This got very annoying very quickly.
The difficulty as I mention was extremely hard, and there
was a Save feature taking one block of memory.
Overall 4 out of 10
This game barely deserves the huge four I give it. There was
only a few things keeping this thing a float the fact that
it did have at least 2 cool characters and that the esper
system was unique. The weak story bad for 99 graphics and
old midi's hampered this game pretty badly. Despite the fact
that game had horrifically long and tedious loading time.
This really made the game hard to play and made me and many
other not want to really play it since it took so long to
load. FF5 loading time was way less than this game, and even
ones who loved the original FF6 this game was a real
annoyance to them in that factor.
The Replay value on this game was very low. I never touch
this game, and even if I would have loved it I doubt I would
touch it after I beaten it. It's just not a good game and
most RPG's lose all their value after beating them. It
should be a known fact to not want to play an RPG after you
finally defeated it. You pay it for one reason and that's to
get a good story told and maybe and just maybe have some fun
on the side. You don't play the game to really play it again
and again. Since RPG's are one time affairs so I doubt you
will play it or beat it after you beat it. Since the story
is pretty much cut and dry the game really wasn't worth
beating again.
The Fun Factor along with the Replay value was low. This was
one of the most boring games I ever played in my life.
Because you met a new character every 20 seconds it got
boring because you knew they would join your party. This
really made the game very uninteresting and boring to play.
Also with all the random battles the game wasn't a picnic to
play this made the game more boring to play and made you
more frustrated. This game was frustrating and boring. I
really disliked the fact that it took so long to level up
and there was so many random battles. Bottom line is the
game is not fun at all to play.
The Graphics on the game could have used help. When they
first came out the graphics were pretty decent but they were
not up to today's standards. They were way below them and
this game just couldn't compete on such a level. The FMV's
basically saved the graphics. Although I have to admit an
RPG is not suppose to be about just graphics but the
graphics for when it was re released were phenomenally bad
and some of the worst I have ever seen. I was expecting a
touch up but this is all you get this really disappointed
me. Graphics were pretty bad but I think as though the
graphics should have been better than what was seen here.
The sound does make up for some of the bad graphics. Some of
the songs on the game were pretty decent and they tried
their hardest to escape the common realm of just being
annoying midi's . The music was pretty good and you had some
great songs to listen to. The other side of it was pretty
cheesy the sound effects sure weren't good. I think there
was a new song playing in the new FMV if there was or
whatever that was that was a pretty good song and it was
worth listening to. The music as a whole did a pretty decent
job and Square did digitize the music and it as a whole had
a better overall quality ands it was up to par with the rest
of the market.
Overall the game had it's bad points and the bad points
overweighed the good points. This game was truly the worst
game of the series and I really disliked it. I think it
needed some work it should signs of being thrown together
and back when SNES games were out games took much longer to
make this game showed the fact that the game was made very
quickly compared to what else was on the market. You can
tell that did do some work and including the bonuses in the
game made it worth it for those who wanted to play through
the game again. I mean I for one wasn't interested in
playing the game even though I didn't play much of the SNES
version. This was just a pretty bad game and I don't think
it was worth all the praise that it got from the many of
people out there. Overall if you want Final Fantasy 5 you
are stuck with this one, and so you might as well get it
with Final Fantasy 5. But I wouldn't' suggest playing it or
getting it if you already got the one for SNES. There was
just not enough change.
