Ehrgeiz
Reviewed by Dyson Turner
Ehrgeiz has got to be one coolest fighting games there is!!
Besides the fact that it has characters from Final Fantasy
VII, even if it didn't it will still be just as good. The
Cloud vs. Sephiroth battle is worth the price of this game.
There is an array of combos that you can perform, lots of
special moves, and overall it takes days to master
everything you need to know. Fun mini games and a side quest
what more could you ask for from a fighting game. It has a
great story line an array of hdden characters, spectacular
graphics, and countless more.
Story 10/10
50 Years ago, an enigmatic weapon fabricated from an unknown
material was discovered in the remnant of an ancient German
castle. The weapon came to be known as Ehrgeiz. It was
bequeathed to the victorious contestant of a tournament that
determined the world's greatest fighter. In time it became
the name and emblem of the tournament itself. The winner of
this tournament would be crowned the world's best fighter
and would have the opportunity to use the Ehrgeiz to get the
secrets of the ancient castle. The contestants in the
tournament each have their own goals they are.
Ken Mishima- He is participating in the
tournament because he previously worked for the company that
knew the true power of the Ehrgeiz. He doesn't anymore and
he wasn't to obtain the Ehrgeiz for himself.
Yoko Kishibojin (YoYo Yoko) -She is young but an incredible
fighter she is gifted with the art of Jyujutsu. She is
working for ICPO to research the activities of the tournament.
Prince Doza- He is a kick boxer, who entered the tournament
just to test the powers and opponents that he encounters. He
has no interest in the Ehrgeiz he just wants a good fight.
Sasuke- He is a mysterious warrior, who works for Red
Scorpion. He has lost his memory and he seeks the Ehrgeiz
because he thinks that it will give him his memory back.
Lee Shuwen- He is the master of the lethal Kempo, a poison
killed him. An Elixir has brought him back to life. He wants
the Ehrgeiz because of its rumors to hold immortality.
Wolf Girl Jo-She was in an airplane accident as an infant,
she has been raised by wolves her whole life. When she was
captured Red Scorpion scouted her to seek the Ehrgeiz.
Dasher Inoba- After his master's death Inoba seeks the
legendary Ehrgeiz because of the Stone that his master had.
Now he wants to find out its legendary power.
Han Daehan- A young action star and a master of Tae Kwon Do.
His right leg is missing because a strange black dust
surrounded it, and his leg disappeared right afterwards. He
wants an explanation for this occurrence and feels that the
Ehrgeiz may hold it.
The other characters from Final Fantasy VII really don't
have stories they have been summoned to take part of this
tournament for unknown reason. The characters are Cloud,
Tifa, Sephiroth, Yuffie, and Vincent and a Red XIII like Django.
Visuals 10/10
The graphics on this game are exquisite. Every character is
large and moves very fluently. The Final Fantasy characters
look even better than they did during the fighting sequences
in that game. The Full Motion video looks spectacular; the
Anime looks very realistic in the videos. The backgrounds
look superb as well, each one even better than the last. The
graphics are very innovative and they surpass my
expectations of how good a fighting game can be. The
characters move very fluently, and there isn't any slowdown
or distortion. Almost all the backgrounds are interactive,
well at least 50% of them you can jump on walls and rooftops
to get the drop on the enemy below. Truly the visual
department was great.
Audio 10/10
The music that plays through out the game is great, and it
is some of the best I ever heard in a fighting game in a
very long time. Rest assured the sound track would not be
turned off on this game. On one stage there is even the
Final Fantasy prelude that is in all the games, it's a
little faster than usual but it sounds pretty good. The
Sound effects are great as well, there aren't any character
voices, hearing Cloud and Sephiroth would have been great.
You do get the announcer voice and karate yells, other than
that not much else happens.
Game Play 10/10
This game is for 1 or 2 players. You have your usual 1 on 1
combat and many other modes and methods of playing. Not too
many fighting games give you all the features this one has.
You have 3 separate modes. The modes are Ehrgeiz, Mini games
and Battle Quest. I will discuss the Ehrgeiz first.
Ehrgeiz
This is the arcade mode where you select the character of
your choice to participate in the Ehrgeiz tournament. You
can also do the Vs. mode from here as well. Vs. is where you
and a friend can go head to head and basically play for
hours. Then you have the practice mode I think that besides
the regular arcade mode this is the coolest you can battle
yourself. That's right select 1P versus 1P and both
characters will do the same moves, this is hard to explain
but when you actually play it you will find out why. You
have a bevy of combos in your arsenal, and matches go by
pretty quickly. Every time you hit you get points like 100,
200, combos gives you even more points. You also have
special moves with you press O to use, for instance Cloud
uses his sword, and if you charge it he will use Comet, the
same as Sephiroth. Tifa is the only character that I know of
who can charge her special bar back up, for the cost of
energy. Other characters have specials as well like hand
takes his hand off and uses his gun arm. You can also jump
on ledges to take a break from a cheap opponent who will
keep using a projectile on you. The arena is totally 3D like
an action game so it is best to run around and try and get a
sneak attack on a very defensive opponent. This 3D arena
adds a different feel than an ordinary fighting game does
you have to in corporate new strategies on your foes. You
fight in different arenas and you progress through the
characters best of 3 like any other fighting game. Overall
the regular tournament is fun, but it is not the best thing
in the game.
Mini Games
There are 4 very fun and enjoyable mini games, which are a
break from the action of the game. The four games are
Infinity Battle, Battle Runner, Battle Beach, and Battle
Panel. The most fun out of these would be Battle Beach and
Battle Runner. I will explain each one.
Infinity Battle is much like the regular Ehrgeiz tournament
wit ha new twist. It is an endurance tournament, where you
are pitted against all the people in the game. There is some
strategy involved, it isn't best 2 out of 3. You start with
a full energy and special bar and so does your opponent,
when you beat the opponent a certain number of points are
added to your energy bar. If it fills an entire heart
whenever your energy bar gets depleted when you run out of
hearts and energy its game over. This is the only game that
is player only.
Battle Runner is a very fun game. The object is to beat a
or human controlled opponent around the arena. You
use normal game moves as well, so you can fight each over.
There also items that pop up from time to time that help you
or your opponent win. The items are RVS this changes the
direction the goal is in. HPEXC this exchanges the HP
between you and the opponent. The final one is SP UP this
refills you special energy bar. If you are in the lead you
can get these and they will cancel the opponent's
opportunity for the help. You can run around and just win
but there is strategy involved in this. When your energy bar
gets depleted you will be Ko'ed and you won't be able to get
up for about 10 seconds. This game is for 2 players.
Battle Beach is the most fun and easiest game to play. It
consist of 3 events, the first one is Battle Dash. The
Battle dash is a foot race between you and an opponent. This
race is strait forward and a race to the finish line. The
second event is Battle Flag in this event you start flat on
your face, you get up run then dive for the flag. The last
event is Battle Hurdle you jump over hurdles and the first
one to the finish line wins. The person with the highest
score wins the whole thing. It really doesn't matter who
wins each separate event as long as you score real high in
one or 2 of them. If you break the record you get an extra
1000 points this really helps if you are behind in the game.
This game is also for 2 players.
The last Game is Battle Panel, in this game you and a friend
or the Com try to place as many color squares on an 8x8
grid. This game is extremely hard and it will take skill and
cunning to defeat your foe. You have to use a lot of quick
strategy to make sure that your opponent doesn't get more
squares than you do. You have to try to place your color in
between the colors of the opponent. At any time you or the
opponent can get chain reactions. Which will turn over many
squares. If you turn over all the squares in your color you
win, or when there are no more squares that can be turned
over the person with the most color squares wins the game.
You can also tackle your opponent to deter them from their
goal. This has got to be the hardest mini game and it takes
a while to figure it out. This game is for 2 players as
well.
Brand New Quest
This is a side game, which many find more fun and
challenging than the real game itself. It is a lot like an
RPG; because you gain levels get magic and talk to people.
The story of it is, an archaeologist named Koji Masuda is
going to find the ancient ruins because it is said to hold
the secret of immortality. And he is also the father of YoYo
Yoko. Along side him is his student Claire Andrews. There
are two modes to play, normal which are two players and hard
which allows only one player, and you can't go back to the
village. When you drop down you will be transported to the
shores of another dimension. There will be a small town
where you can buy things and a bank to deposit your money.
The different shops are the Merchant shops where you can
purchase items or sell them. The magic shop this shop sells
magic stones. Magic stones are like MP's and are used solely
for your materia. The Blacksmith will repair your weapons
and armor. He can even combine some to make them stronger.
Then there's the hotel where you can exchange your partner
deposit money in the bank and talk to the manager. You will
be given 2 materia stones at the beginning of your quest.
The basic ones fire and ice. You will also be given a dagger
and a small shield. When you enter the dungeon you will
fight a lot of monsters most of the easier monsters will go
down wit ha few hits. They also drop weapons armor and food.
You will need food because your character becomes quite
hungry when it fights. Each one gives you a different form
of nutrition. There are may other things in the new quest as
well, so this adds a lot to the game play. The difficulty
through the game is adjustable and you have a save feature
for this, and arcade mode.
Overall 10 out of 10
This game is truly excellent. With all the different modes
and games inside here you will be playing this game for a
long time to come. This is a game that will not get boring
quickly which most fighting games tend to do. Even if you
are by yourself this game offers a lot of variety, and fun.
A fighting game fan couldn't ask for more fun than this game
with the different modes and events this truly stands out in
front of the competition. Just the battle of Sephiroth vs.
Cloud is worth the price of this game, never mind the other
features. The replay value is through the roof with all the
things and options this game has. I for one would not change
a thing on this game, if there were an Ehrgeiz 2 I would be
the first in line to get it. I can't even fathom a sequel
that can even come close to this game or any game period for
that matter. If you like fighting games and you love Final
Fantasy either way you can not pass up Ehrgeiz.
