Crusader: No Remose

Reviewed by Jeremy Peeples Crusader: No Remorse was released for the Sony Playstation in January of 1997. This is basically an adventure game, only it's played in the pseudo-3D, 3/4 overhead viewpoint. I will compare it to the Saturn version in the graphics, sound, and control departments. Graphics-6/10- The character models appear nicely detailed, unfurtunately they are too small and are too pixellated, the animation is also way too jerky. The only good part is the intellegent use of lighting effects and the FMV. Overall, decent, they aren't fancy, but they get the job done. They are basically the same as the Saturn version's, they're a lttle sharper than the Saturn versions's ; other than that, no serious improvements were made. Pros- The characters are nicely detailed, great use of lighting effects, and the FMV's are nice, a little corny, but at least they're in the game. Cons- Small, pixellated characters, erratic animation. Sound-8/10- The music is moody and fits the game's theme perfectly, the music really helps to get you into the mood to play the game; as does the sound effects, none of them sound out of place. Overall, great, the best aspect of the game. Again, the same as the Saturn version's, they do sound a little clearer though. Pros- Great, atmospheric music that helps set the tone for the game. The sound effects are great, very clear, and they all fit their action perfectly. Control-6/10- There is a distinct learning curve to them (mainly due to the game's 3/4 overhead perspective), but once you learn them, they're almost second nature. Be very wary of the learning curve early on, you'll probably get frustrated with the controls, so stick to them. They are more responsive than the Saturn version's, other than that, they're practically identical. Pros- They are very responsive. Cons- The learning curve (it's mainly due to the game's 3/4 overhead perspective, the controls don't fit the perspective well, they would be better suited for a 3D game), the control problems could have been avoided. Gameplay-7/10- Every level has a set of objectives for you to complete, this helps to keep things interesting and is a nice change of pace from the usual, kill-everything-in-the-level-to-win style that most of the games in this genre employ. You can also destroy pretty much everything in the game. Pros- The objectives help keep things interesting. Cons- The game may seem shallow at first. Story-7/10- You have to destroy an enemy army. It's a basic story, but it fits the post-apocolyptic setting perfectly. Replay Value-4/10- Once you beat the game, there's no real reason to come back. The only reason I can think of would be to destroy everything in the levels, you're bound to miss something. Presentation-8/10- Perfect, everything fits the setting, from the menus, to the characters. Overall-7/10- A great action game for fans of the genre, the game combines good graphics, great, atmospheric sound effects and music, and goo controls to make one of the most memorable action games in recent years. It's basically the same game that was on the Saturn, only the graphics aer a little sharper as is the sound. Buy or Rent?-Buy- You can probably find it for a good price (under $15), go ahead and buy it, yo won't regret it.
