- One of the greatest consoles of all time!
Only one word can describe my family's overall feelings toward this console; love. The PS2 is the best console I have ever owned. It's better than the Xbox 360, Super Nintendo, NES, PS1 and the Xbox put together. Which are all great consoles in their own right.
When my father brought are first PS2 home in 2001 and plugged it in for the first time it was amazing. Are first game was Gran Turismo 3, which is still one of my favorite games, the graphics were outstanding, the physics simulation was new and brought an unparalleled level of realism to video games. Soon are library of games had grown, including titles such as Ace Combat 4, Grand Theft Auto 3, God of War and many more. This console was so much fun that we never even considered buying a Gamecube or Xbox, it was like they didn't even exist. Now in the year 2008, SEVEN years later, are old original PS2 is still running and playing games like the day we got it. And the graphics are still good! They're not the same generation as the Xbox 360 or PS3 but remember one thing: gameplay > graphics. Some people have reportedly had problems with the older PS2, but from what I have heard this was a very small percentage. The only problems we have ever had with ours was a "disc read error" which was easily fixed by cleaning the lens, and the plastic grommet around the A/V output has worn down a bit so we have to jiggle it now and then to get a prefect connection(not a big problem).
The new slim PS2 is great as well. I do not own one yet but I play on my friend's all the time. We gave our old PS2 to my sister when she moved out not to long ago, so now I am planning on buying a new one.
Do yourself a favor, buy this console! There are over 1,400 games out for the PS2! In every imaginable genre and style, and almost all of them are great games. You will not find diversity like this in the library for the Xbox 360, PS3 or Nintendo Wii for years, and maybe even never!
BE WARNED! The Playstation 3 is NOT backwards compatible for PS2 games anymore! Only PS1 games. I do not know what Sony was thinking but if you have a choice between spending $600 to $1000 or more on a PS3 and a few games. Or spending $200 to $400 on a PS2 and A LOT of games pick the PS2, way more bang for the buck.
