Whenever someone does something inventive and inspiring buy that, don't buy its sequel. The sequel is a rehash of the first at best, and at worst the creator either hadn't the energy to do something creative, and just threw together a standard knock-off. Note such sequels as Alundra 2, Suikoden (what is it now, four or five?), Wild Arms, etc. Sure the original was great at one time, but unless you find one that broke the mold, or the story is so interesting and developed that it continues through several games (from what I read of Kingdom Hearts in plot spoilers it's not quite that developed), it's not really worth it.
The only instances where a sequel outperformed an original is where it managed to be more creative than the first: such as Legend of Mana using nonlinear plot sequences and a learning system of battle (before, the SD3 sort of went in this direction, with its choice of party altering the story), or the Final Fantasy series which despite the reputation for being streamlined, each Final Fantasy is an experiment with a new battle system.
No, I haven't bought KH2, but after hearing the other reviews, I can safely say that if I were to buy a Kingdom Hearts it would be Kingdom Hearts 1.

The original Kingdom Hearts has it all: gameplay, interactive and explorative environment, superb voice acting and a in-game mechanic that flows beautifully with the story-line-- offering tremendous replay value. Kingdom Hearts II...well...
Good points of the game itself keep one thing intact: voice acting, sound and graphical detail. Square knows what it's doing to keep things authentic and they prove it once again in KH2. You'll think you're watching a Japanese Animation while staring at the constant display of pushing the PS2 to it's limits with all the flashing, and brightly painted worlds. That overall is the most impressive thing about this game...
Bad points of the game are as follows:
1. Well designed levels with absolutely nothing to accomplish besides fighting a diminished an unchallenging number of nobodies and heartless.
2. Too many cut-scenes drag the game down significantly.
3. Fighting controls make the battles too easy and boring over time.
4. One world where you do nothing but sing-a-long.
5. Another world after you defeat it once there is absolutely NOTHING to do.
In other words I'm disappointed. The "reaction" commands are fun to watch, but that's what you'll do. Watch. Press triangle and set the controller down. You'll barely spend time fighting with the "X" button. Levels that you expected to be as virbrantly exploring are alas a mere shell of their former selves, there are no chests where you must wait to gain a certain ability to reach them, and there is no story that you must defeat in order to GAIN that ability to reach that certain chest. There are no TRINITIES, certain abilities you can only use FOR CERTAIN WORLDS. For instance "dodge roll" can only be used at Mickey's Castle, but after you defeat it, there are no more enemies. What a waste.
This game has no replay value whatsoever...unless you NEED to watch the story again that is nearly confusing if you haven't played or at least read upon "Chain of Memories" for the GBA. Speaking of the Story Line, the "cause and effect" is diminished greatly. Nothing dramatic happens. Find the bad guy, take them out, everybody is happy. I'm terribly disappointed. The camera is better for the R3...buy it if you're a fan but DO NOT expect it to be the greatness that is Kingdom Hearts. Unfortunately this game nearly turned the route of Devil May Cry 1 and 2, whereas 2 was horrific.

I loved the first game. I found myself really sucked into the whole world of Kingdom Hearts. So, needless to say, I was thrilled to get the sequel, but I was a little let down. The characters are great, the art is top-notch, the voice acting is SUPERB, to say the least (some of the best voice acting I've ever heard, in fact) but I feel like the worlds sort of fall flat. They are a little boring. The Lion King world, for example, is just a flat plain, and then a path through a gorge, then a path through a canyon, then a path through a forest . . . you get the idea.
Also, the came is outrageously easy. All you have to do to win almost every battle is hit X over and over. But still, it is a good game, and worth your money if your a Squaresoft or Disney fan.

This game surpasses the first one by far. It is fun, easy to play and is definetly worth the money you payed to play it. You can either play to beat the game, go to different worlds familiar to disney/final fantasy realms or you play the mini games with in or around said worlds. Absoletely wonderful - I could barely put it down.

Kingdom Hearts II is a beautifully rendered PS2 game. The music and voice talent is outstanding.
But the game mechanics are almost non-existant. The game is quite long, but that is because of the tediously regular cutscenes. The actual player-controlled portions of Kingdom Hearts II are far too short.
Seeing the many Disney worlds in Kingdom Hearts II is fun, but the exploration is limited and too linear.
Kingdom Hearts II is a fine game for pre-teens that enjoy watching pretty special effects...But anyone older will probably find the gameplay tedious.
