I am now ready to die!
This game make me realize how mundane my life is. What a self reflection!
You can take me now, oh non-existant god.

Now this is gonna sound complicated: all Final Fantasy games were released in Japan first(and still are) then they come here. Well back when we had NES/SNES, they released Final Fantasy 1, Final Fantasy IV, and Final Fantasy VI and renamed them to 1, 2, and 3 respectively. So once Final Fantasy VII(probably the best RPG ever created and I don't throw that around lightly) came out in 1997, people went "whoa, 7? what about 4 to 6?" Enter Anthology, Chronicles and Origins and the recently announced Final Fantasy III remake for the DS. This review deals with Final Fantasy Anthology, containing V and VI
Final Fantasy V
Story: Bartz, Reina, Garaf and Faris have to take down X-Death(dumbest FF villain name ever) from controlling 4 crystals. Maybe it's my status as a post VI-player but it must've been irritating saving those damn crystals over and over.
Graphics: They're pretty standard really, I mean this is the Super Nintendo so they're not great, even for SNES standards. The FMV's of course are cool.
Music: Pretty good but not spectacular like IV or VI.
Gameplay: It excels for one reason: The Job System. For the first time, you can customize your characters rather than just being one particular class. Master one job, move to another. The story is eh, music's ok, but play it cause it's a FF.
Final Fantasy VI
Story: They're existed once powerful beings called Espers many centuries ago. Now they're gone and the world is in an Industrial Revolution-like setting with airships and weaponry. A soldier of the Empire, Terra, was used for battle and after being free of mind control, joins a group of resistance members planning to take down the Empire.
Graphics: For the most part the graphics are great for the SNES era. They're still not as sharp/detailed as Chrono Trigger or even colorful like Yoshi's Island but they work in the end.
Sound/Music: The music here is usually cited as the best Uematsu soundtrack he's done. While personally I go with VII, VI is by no means a flawed soundtrack. There's tons of great themes: catchy ones, emotional ones and epic ones like Terra's Theme, Forever Rachel, Aria de Mezzo Caraterre and Dancing Mad.
A HUGE cast list with 14 playable characters, still the largest cast in a Final Fantasy game. While it's nice to have variety, some don't get as much story as they should've. Ones like Celes, Terra, Locke and Setzer have substanstial backstory while others might just join your party and that's it. The game brings in the Esper System. It's not a wild departure like Junctioning but essentially you can equip an Esper to use in battle and after each battle you get points to learn a spell. Learn it and on to the next one. Finish them all and you can pick someone else.
While V is merely playable for the Job system and the fact it's a FF game, VI is required playing for an RPG fan.

Regardless of what the actual game stats say, both of these games are playable as a two-player game. Granted only the first player controls where the party goes, but the second can then play as whatever characters are assigned to the 2nd controller.
FFV & FFVI are two of the best examples of Square's storytelling prowess in an environment not bogged down with 'need' for amazing graphics. The games may be old but they can still hold their own when compared to the more linear Square games now available.
While one may think that these early games _were_ just for one player, playing the adventure with a friend and sharing in it makes any game more fun.

Do not pay 80 dollars for this game. it will come out sometime in december for 20 dollars because square will rerelease it as a greatest hits game. final fantasy 5's story kinda suks, but the job system beats FF7's materia system or any other type in any final fantasy game i've played. haven't played all of ff 6 but it was pretty good. graphics not very good, except opening and closing CGI at opening and closing of each game. havent seen end of 6 but others were cool. FF chronicles, vagrant story and xenogears will also come out for 20

FFV
Final Fantasy 5 is a game that had never been released in the United States until Anthology came out. The first flaw with this game is the same tired old story of some evil is collecting, or in the case of this game, destroying the crystals and a band of heroes must stop the evil from destroying the world. Furthermore, the character development is sub-par for a Final Fantasy game as the player never truly begins to care about what the characters are doing. The worst part of this game is the random battles. Now, I know that this is a common complaint of rpg gamers, but this game borderlines on insane in this area. It's ridiculous the time you'll spend trying to get from the beginning of a room to the end of it. Also, this game may be a little difficult for some (the only other Final Fantasy I have played that is more difficult than this one is FFIV). Of course one has to look passed the graphics and music when considering that this is a re-release. The graphics and music are actually pretty good if this was 1992 (year of original release). Overall this game is difficult, dated, and sometimes aggravating, but it has its moments of glory, and can be pretty fun.

FFVI
Final Fantasy 6 was originally FF3 here in the US. This game is one of the best RPGs ever released and stands the test of time. The story is great (not the same old crystal story), and the overall feel of the game is just awesome. Also, there is still plenty of side quests to do after the initial events of the story are done and gone. Of course, some may not be able to look beyond the premitive graphics, but I think the gameplay may take some peoples focus off of them. The random battles are not as bad as in most Final Fantasys, and one does get to feeling quite powerful after completing many of the side quests and leveling up to a certain extent. That's another great thing about this game is the characters are almost always on the level they need to be before fighting a boss. This is a constant problem in other games and usually leads to the player having to spend hours just leveling up to destroy a boss. Overall this game is one of the best RPGs and every gamer should own it.

Final Fantasy CD
This is a cd of music from both games. It is good if you like Final Fantasy type music, but it could have been better. If squaresoft would have brought in a full orchestra to redo the music instead of just porting it directly from the games it would have been a lot better. Of course, it is a great extra for the Final Fantasy Anthology package.

The overall rating for Final Fantasy Anthology: 4
