The Story Unfolds

But when she was assassinated on their wedding day, Jason vowed to take revenge on her killers, and to restore her life. heroes. An epic-scale, action role-playing game (RPG), Rise of the Argonauts immerses gamers in a gladiatorial adventure engaged in brutal combat, with warriors such as Hercules, Pan and Achilles as they traverse a world ruled by mythological gods.

Incredibly Absorbing Play
Rise of the Argonauts immerses players completely in the world of ancient Greece. One way this is accomplished is by streamlining the RPG elements in exciting new ways. For example, rather than increasing arbitrary stats like 'Intelligence plus one', items and upgrades give Jason unique, tangible abilities like the Fist of Ares, which causes shields to explode, ripping apart nearby enemies. And individual battles aren't dependant upon a hit-point and dice system. If you manage to get behind a shield and slice into your enemies' neck, their head will be cleaved from their shoulders. The developers also spent time researching the look and feel of ancient Greek artwork, crafts and architecture for a richness of surrounding that is astonishing.

As in ancient Greece, in Rise of the Argonauts players must curry the favor of the Gods. As you achieve deeds, you can dedicate them to different gods. A god's favor will also be affected by choices you make in conversations with non-player characters. As your favor, or disfavor, with a particular god rises, your abilities will be affected accordingly. But be careful, because the gods like few things better than meddling in the lives of their human subjects.

Amazing Battles are Loads of Fun
The battle system in Rise of the Argonauts is simple enough to pick up quickly, but has more finesse than your typical button masher. In battling enemies you weaken their armor, then their limbs, eventually finishing them off. Weapons can be switched mid-battle to unleash devastating combos, while using god-granted powers can also cause serious damage. Players can also choose how to defeat their enemies, and in so doing find interesting new allies. For example, in one of your battles you will fight Medusa herself. If you kill her, her brother Perseus will grieve for her but join you on your quest. If you save Medusa, however, Athena will command her to join your crew as a beginning to her penance for her misdeeds.

In Rise of the Argonauts gamers will find a deep, and enthralling story that is matched only by the fun of playing it. With a wide range of upgradeable weapons, loads of different heroes to help you, gods to entreat, and an ever-changing story that is constantly affected by the choices you make, the possibilities seem endless. Add to that stunning visuals, a musical score created by film composer Tyler Bates, and a smooth blend of action and RPG that is new to the genre, and this is a game you simply must check out.

You'll recognize characters from classic myths such as Medusa and her head of snakes.

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best game in genre since Eternal Darkness
I haven't enjoyed a story such as the one in Rise of the Argonauts in over 5 years. I usually skip right through the dialog in hoping a cinematic was just around the corner. In this tale, you are constantly replying to whoever you are speaking to, shaping the story for your version of Jason.

The conversation style is 100% to my liking!

The fighting is a bit difficult at first, but once you appeal to the 4 gods, your strength increases. Its both graphic and intense!

I just finished Athena's temple last night and beat Medusa. What an incredibly graphic and engaging boss battle. It was AWESOME.

This game is a 6/5 stars.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - An ok distraction
I really don't have too much to say about the game but that doesn't mean it's a bad score and truthfully it doesn't deserve soem of the scores that I have seen given in the reviews for this game.

For the unititiated, this game takes on the story telling of Jason and the Argonauts as jason tries to resurrect his dead wife as told in a great beginning cutscene.

This game is pretty much your standard hack and slash fare which upon playing you may ask yourself why couldn't Too Human be this way or why wasn't there a 300 game made based on this?

The controls are pretty straightforward and truthfully, it's poor man's God of War.

However what the game lacks in the 'excitability' department it makes up in storytelling and even that is a mixed bag. It's done based on the same ideology of Mass Effect where all the dialogue is spoken and it's pretty decently done, however, I really wished that the characters didn't look so static as they talked. And there is a LOT of talking and you can also opt to speed thru some of the dialogue just by pushing the B button. One thing that is cool some of your decision does have somewhat of an affect on the game but mostly it's thru acheivements that you earn as well as pleasing the gods.

Graphically speaking, for a non triple A title, it's a gorgeous game....when you stand still or watch a cut scene, but moving sometimes there is a loss of framerate and you can see 'white panels' where there are no seams (it's pretty ahrd to describe unless you are playing it) in some outdoors parts but sometimes it's pretty un noticable.

As far as the sounds, not pretty bad...the music feels like a B rate Greek epic and the sound effects aren't all that bad for this game.

Overall it's not a bad game, it's pretty decent and you can ramp the difficulty up or down as you see fit and it's not particulary overwhelming. This is a game that you can play at your leisure after the CoDs and GoWs have been played and mastered.

the only reason why I couldn't rate this higher is because for a game that is a standard game of this type there was no mini map nor marker in the game to show you where you were going and it's sorely needed here. It's kind of frustrating to have to pause to look at the map and go back into you rplay when you get lost.

Scale of 1 to 4 it gets a 2.5 (if they allowed it!)

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Surprisingly Addictive
I thought this game was great. I am not the type for RPG games typically, as I usually lose interest too soon before finishing it. But for some reason I really got hooked on this one. The story line was fantastic, and game play was fun. Some say it is repetitive, but I don't see it that way. It WAS an easy game, and definitely NOT challenging. However, in the overall context of the game I think making some of the action scenes too difficult would drag the game on too long. I would guess it took about 12 hours or more to finish the game. (Not being a RPG gamer that is a long game for me).

Great story, great graphics, strong gameplay.

A big downfall of the game is it seems nearly impossible to level up your character in one pass-through of the game. In the game the leveling up is done by pleasing the gods and uncovering stars in constellations. I didn't see anyway to go back and replay areas to finish these side projects.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - No Mass Effect!
This game has repetitive and linear gameplay. I enjoy a good conversation in an RPG as much as the next game player, but the mixture is way off, with far to much conversation and battles that are too short and too easy.
the boss fights are either far too easy or have nothing to do with the established combat system. Find the pattern, rinse and repeat. Very dull. The world seems very small after Oblivion, Mass Effect and FO 3. Rental at best.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Not very good
This game is not very good. I played for over 3 hours now, and it is nothing but running around talk to this guy, then run to the next place and talk to the next guy. Not a lot of action, and when you do fight, it is that same button mashing over and over again. It is nothing like Mass Effect! The only good things are the music and voice acting. Graphics are not too bad. The map system stinks. You have to go to a menu to see map, and then there is no zoom for detail. I spent the first hour of the game trying to find my ship. Not even worth the rental.
