HI
These are nice units. But unlike identical units I have boiught elsewhere, these came unformatted from this seller. So they were not "plug-in-and-play." I had to pay my computer guy $50 to set them up for me. So it wasn't such a bargain, afterall.
Rating: - eGo Meets Expectations
I've been using the drive for 3 weeks with Apple's Time Machine. It performs very well. Quiet. Fast. Takes up very little space in my pack. Ejects instantly from my desktop. Meets all expectations at a reasonable price. I recommend it.
Rating: - So far so good
My 2007 MacBook's hard drive crashed a while back and erased everything important...my music, my resume, my class syllabi...everything of any value.
I'm determined not to let that happen again. So far the Iomega eGo with Firewire and USB 2.0 is working great. I am running OS X 10.5.5 with Time Machine, which automatically backs my entire computer to my hard drive whenever I plug it in. What a nifty feature!
The drive was pre-formatted so I didn't need to do any work. Plug and play...that's it. So far this product is a five star item - nice size, holds tons of stuff and feels solid. I'll be sure to update if any problems arise.
Rating: - Quiet and minimalist data flask
Note: I have only used this for a few days. I am using the 320 GB jet black model with Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard)'s "Time Machine" backup software that comes with the OS.
The drive comes with both FireWire (IEEE 1394) and USB cables. Drive is powered by either cable's inherent power and, while it has a DC-in port, that goes unused. This thing will get a little hot (who cares?) if you leave it plugged in, but I just backup my MacBook once in a while, unmount the drive, and unplug it.
The twin FireWire ports on the back allow you to "pass-through" to any other FireWire devices you have. Running the Mac's "Time Machine" software, this thing backed up my drive's 120 GB of data in 2.5 hours via FireWire. As the other reviewer said, it looks like a flask! I heart it a little bit extra because of that.
Rating: - Iomga Portable Hard Drive [500GB] Firewire/USB
Very satisfied with the Iomega 500GB portable hard drive. Runs a little warm but Iomega Tech Svcs said it was normal. The drive comes clean without any formatting...so you have to "initialize" the drive first. WinXP "disk management" [diskmgmt.msc] has everything you need to do this process before formatting to NTSC. Remember, you are going to lose 7.1% [35GB] of storage space after format. So the usable storage space in this case will be 465GB or 93%. Oh yes, there is no ON/OFF switch for USB/Firewire and DC operation. I don't consider this a negative for the price I paid. Oops...should be 5 stars.
