Rating: - Satisfactory
After returning the MS Wireless Notebook Laser Mouse 6000 for being unacceptable, I wasn't planning on getting another MS mouse. But because the design is quite unique with the arch mouse, I decided to give it a try.
PROs:
+ The wireless signal distance is quite impressive. I like to hook up my laptop near my Sony Bravia HDTV and use the TV monitor as PC monitor while browsing with the wireless mouse from the other end of the wall atop the comfort of my bed -- some 15 ft. -- and this arch mouse's signal hasn't failed me yet.
+ The USB is so tiny that I'm not fearful of it being knocked off accidentally or being bumped or sagging like the previous MS wireless mouse. It's almost unnoticeable, so it doesn't get on my nerves with hideous protrusion.
+ Programming the buttons was very easy with multitude of choices.
+ Can fold it to disable the connection and tuck it away in a provided pouch. Nice touch to be able to tuck the USB inside the folded mouse.
CONs:
- The left, side button is ill designed. It might be good for certain sized hands, but the button isn't located well for my hand. Not only that, it's so STIFF that I found myself pressing it hard twice before succeeding. If I want to be able to use the left, side button at all, I'll just have to get used to it and wait for my thumb muscle to get strong with each use (unless the mouse can be programmed for left, side button's touch sensitivity).
- Just don't get the pricing of $40+
Bottomline: I'm keeping it primarily because of its impressive signal coverage.
Rating: - The Best Portable mouse ever!
The wireless signal is great, it does take some getting use to how light it is. It is also sensitive so you may want to adjust that in the control panel. Also there is a strange glitch I've experienced under vista32 where the wheel will not scroll in explorer when the receiver is left plugged in while waking the PC up from hibernation.
Also the mouse is "off" while folded, you cant use it until it is unfolded. Other than that it is very comfortable and feels natural.
Rating: - Nice idea, poor quality build
This is a great idea in several ways. It's elegant, folds compactly, and the wireless works flawlessly. Unfortunately, as I have read elsewhere, the scroll wheel stopped working within 2 weeks. This seems to be a known weakness of this product. For the $40 to $60 this usually sells for, such a poor quality key component is inexcusable. I'd really like this if it were built better. I have had $3 mice that lasted longer. Disappointed that MS would put their name on such a shoddy product.
Rating: - I WANTED to like this!
Bought it recently and surprisingly within 60 days the scroll wheel stopped functioning. Broken, no more obnoxious clicking sound! As neat as it sounds, Microsoft has a quality problem. Stay away until they fix it.
Rating: - Right in a lot of ways
I bought this mouse as a trial to see if I might like to use it for corporate replacements when mice fail. Answer: Yes. And I've sampled just about every mouse that Microsoft has produced.
The mouse feels full sized when opened, but takes little space when folded up. It uses the tiny usb transciever with no wire or "pod" extending from the part that plugs into the computer. No direct line of sight necessary.
The scroll seems good, not quite as high quality as the Explorer 2 wireless, but the clicking is phenomenal. The back button is good. The only missing feature is a forward button, though rarely used, is noticeably missing.
The fit and finish of this mouse is superior. The build quality seems very high. Possibly the best mouse Microsoft has made, from an overall perspective.
Ergonomics seem very good with this mouse. It took me no adjustment time going from an Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 to this mouse. It takes only 2 AAA batteries for which Microsoft says should last 6 months.
Best feature: The mousing seems incredibly precise and high resolution. It is very good at navigating very fine movements.
Edit in, a few weeks later: I bought two of these and while I'm still very happy with both of them, the scroll wheel stopped working on the red one. It spins, but there's no clicking and the computer doesn't register that it is scrolling. Amazon is replacing, and since the other one is fine I'm hoping this is an abnormality.
