Amazon.com Product Description:
Tomb Raider: Underworld for Wii by Eidos resumes where Tomb Raider: Legend left off. This installment introduces a new, interactive playing environment that gives players a chance to immerse themselves more fully into the game. Players once again take the role of Lara Croft as she explores such wide-ranging places as the Arctic, Mexico, and beneath the Mediterranean Sea.

Lara's environment is now much more realistic and interactive. View larger.

And now she can hold onto a ledge with one hand and fire a gun with the other. View larger.
Interactive Worlds Introduces Realistic gameplay
Unlike the previous games in the series, Lara's environment is now much more realistic and interactive. Footprints will be left in mud, for example, but only until it rains and then they will wash away. Lara's shirt will also get wet, and she's more likely to lose her grip if she is standing on a slippery, rain-soaked ledge. When the sun comes out, her shirt will dry and the slippery surfaces regain their friction.

In Underworld, Lara also has a lot more flexibility in how she makes her way through a level, as there is often more than one way to get from here to there. She can now climb walls with texture and rocky outcroppings to reach areas she previously wouldn't have been able to access.

All of these additions have been made to give the game a non-linear, open feel. Players can interactive with the environment by doing things they find to be intuitive, and the game will respond in an appropriate way. When Lara interacts with trees, for example, she will push aside leaves using either one or two hands depending on whether or not she's holding something. These details give a lifelike, immersive sensation to the game.

New Melee Combat System
Underworld introduces a new melee combat system that requires players to strategically strike with offensive, defensive, and evasive maneuvers. Lara can now attack enemies with different punches, kicks, knees, and other acrobatic onslaughts. Items lying on the ground, such as poles that were previously walked on, can be picked up and swung at enemies. Players can also perform a greater variety of actions with weapons; for example, Lara can now hold onto a ledge with one hand and fire a gun with the other.

Exclusive Wii Content and Controls
The Wii version of Underworld features specially designed levels and environmental challenges that incorporate the unique capabilities of the Wii remote and nunchuck. Whether you're using the multi-tool kit to excavate secret treasures, taking advantage of the active aim combat system, or controlling the in-game camera angles, the Wii remote and nunchuck deliver unprecedented as you battle your way through challenging levels.

Realistic Enemy and Animal AI
The AI in Tomb Raider: Underworld has also taken a big step forward--both enemies and animals now make independent decisions based on their surroundings, employ ambush and squad tactics when fighting, and will retreat if deemed necessary.

With updated graphics and a more immersive and realistic gameplay, Tomb Raider: Underworld will have both fans and newcomers excited about the newest installment in this popular video game-pinup franchise.

Tomb Raider: Underworld is loaded with a new melee combat system, various weapons, and smarter AI for both enemies and animals.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Fundamentally, A Great Game, But Not On Wii...
I just purchased the Nintendo Wii and the first game I had on my holiday wish list was Tomb Raider Underworld. I've been a huge fan of the series since the original game came out for Playstation, way back in the late 90's. I figured the Wii would be a great new way to play one of my favorite games, and for the most part, I was right.

The overall game elements have met or exceeded my expectations. As expected, the graphics are stunning, with dynamic lighting and highly detailed environs. The music and sound effects are high fidelity and set just the right tone, though I do find some of the dialog in cut scenes a little difficult to hear. The classic components of exploration, maneuvering through complicated labyrinths, and battle are still there. The Wii controls are responsive and the learning curve is not too bad; within thirty minutes or so, I was running, jumping, climbing, swimming, straddling, and shooting with ease. So overall, I have the give the game play high marks.

The story picks up right where the last installment of the game left off. To me, the story was always fun enough, though really just a contrivance to get Laura into exotic locations with those fantastic outfits only Laura would ever wear. That's fine with me, but I'd be just as happy to have her randomly pop up in some new tomb or temple - for me, the puzzles and the exploring are the point of the game. It's great that there is a unifying story, but I don't get too wrapped up in the character motivations. I just want to explore and find every last secret.

And that is where the Wii version looses points with me. The puzzles are not difficult - any gaming novice will figure them out in pretty short order. After finishing the first level and finding all of the "secrets," I went to a walkthrough web site to make sure I hadn't missed anything. To my great disappointment, I found that in the Windows version of the game (and I assume the other platform formats) the first area had no less than 26 treasures, 1 relic and dozens of health packs. On the Wii, I got 7 stupid gold bars that were insultingly easy to find, no health power ups (if Laura gets hurt, she regenerates in about 10 to 15 seconds) and no relics! A relic did appear in my inventory after I had finished the level, but there were no explanation, and as best I can tell, no purpose for the relic once obtained. Now I'm feeling seriously cheated by the Wii version! Finding all those secrets and exploring every nook and cranny is what I enjoy so much in these games!

So, while I still enjoy the game and plan to continue playing, I'm pretty miffed that I'm missing the part of the game I enjoyed the most, and I'm deducting stars because of it.

The Pros:
* Graphics - Five Stars, Fantastic!
* Sound - Five Stars, Very good.
* Control - Four ½ Stars, Very good with little clipping.
* Camera - Four Stars, not as bad as some are saying in other reviews.

The Cons: (Wii Version)
* Puzzles - Two Stars, a third grader won't have trouble with them.
* Exploration for treasure - One Star, what treasure????
* Health System - One Star, Try anything, you can't really get hurt.

I cannot quite understand why the Wii version doesn't include the treasure hunting, and I'm really sorry I didn't know that before I asked for this version. Restore the health packs so you have to really think about how you want to proceed, and add in the hidden treasures and you have a really great game.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Bug fix
I bought this game because I am a huge tombraider fan. I did get the bug in the (puppet no more) room where the switch is missing and I just went back to the previous saved (Thailand) level and played through again without saving (checkpoints are ok) when I back into the room, the switch was there. I didn't have to download any files. No problems since then. It was frustrating but the replay did not take too long and I am enjoying the game again. Maybe next time, they'll fix all bugs before selling them. I would still recommend game to tombraider fans.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Underworld Is Missing Something.
I was very disappointed with this game. After a little internet research I found out why. The Wii version is missing some stages of the game that are found on the other game consoles. There are missing enemies such as sharks and spiders. You can not fire your weapon while hanging on ledge. Basically they removed from the Wii version all the cool stuff you see in the teasers.

I love the Tomb Raider Series and pre ordered this game. I would like to think it is my previous gaming expertise which allowed me to plow through this game in 3-4 leisurely days, but I don't think that was the case. If you are interested in the Tomb Raider and you have a Wii, I highly recommend Tomb Raider: Anniversary over this game. If you have played Tomb Raider before and have to try this new game, I would rent or buy for a different console.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best Tomb Raider Game To Date
I have the Wii version of this game and couldn't be happier. My kids -- even my daughter -- love the Wii-specific puzzles and classic Tomb-Raider game play. We had no problems getting through any levels, as reported in another review. It's also the most beautiful Wii game I've ever seen.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - This game met my expectations :)
I'm a huge fan of Tomb Raider, I loved the Anniversary title for the Wii. Beat that one twice just for fun. So, this game, for those who have played the other Tomb Raider game, this is a piece of cake. Sure some controls are a little different, like the "-" to grab things drop from ledges, etc. BUT you get the hang of it in no time. The swimming has improved dramatically, it is so easy to swim now and fast too. Just use the joystick for actual swimming and the wii remote arrows for direction. I haven't gotten that far in the game yet, but I love it. There's less fighting in this one from what I can tell, which is okay, I primarily love this game for the exploration aspect and figuring out where to go and what to do next. Exactly why I just returned the 007 game because it was too much shooting and no time for regrouping and exploration. I look forward to coming from work and playing this game. It's very entertaining and mellow! Two thumbs up.
