Freedom to Ride on Four Different Mountains
Gamers have their choice of four mountains -- Alaska, Park City, Europe (Alps), and Japan -- each offering a different kind of terrain and feel, as well as landscapes and views. Alaska, for example, has a lot of peak boarding with features such as avalanches and ice chasms. Park City, the famed resort in Utah, features buildings and layouts from the actual resort.

The mountains are huge, with incredible graphics that allow you to see dynamic elements up to 20 miles away. As you ski, objects and locations far away in the distance, such as the base of the mountain, become larger and larger, and the background has the feel of a real, live environment rather than a static image.

Within each mountain, there are peak, back country, and park (resort) areas that provide a variety of gameplay. Just as you would expect, there are plenty of trails on each mountain, with each slope rated from green circle (easy) to double black diamond (extremely difficult).

Race, Do Tricks, Carve New Paths
Shaun White Snowboarding lets you do anything you want at a mountain: you can speed down the fastest slopes, get massive air and do tricks on the half-pipe, and even throw snowballs at other boarders.

By using a combination of the right analog stick and left trigger, you can perform a ton of different tricks on the ground, in the air, and on rails. The game was designed with realistic physics, so each trick looks and performs just as you'd expect it to see it in real life.

While you go down a mountain, you'll see various challenges scattered along the way, such as grinding on rails or specific tricks on the half-pipe.

When you get to the bottom, you can take off your board and hop on a chair or a helicopter to get back to the top and find a new trail.

In the single player mode, Shaun White serves as your mentor as you complete different challenges and competitions until you become good enough to put your skills up against Shaun White himself.

Share the Mountain with Other Online Players
Shaun White Snowboarding also features online multiplayer gameplay. Players can create their own challenges and participate with other online boarders, compete in half-pipe competitions, and even battle it out in straight racing down a trail. With mountains populated by real gamers, you'll feel like you're really out there on the slopes. A standout feature is the video camera that lets you film other boarders doing tricks and upload them for everyone to see.

As you win competitions and do challenges, you earn cash that can be used to purchase new apparel, boards, bindings, and more -- all designed to make your character unique and your gaming experience more fun.

Perhaps one of the most satisfying things you can do is hurl a snowball at another player and talk a little trash afterwards.

So I'm a snowboarder and I've been annoyed with the arcade style of most snowboarding games to date. Amped was good because it gave you real mountains but I felt like technology needed to catch up in order to get the snow and physics right. I think we're getting closer with Shaun White Snowboarding.

The graphics are par for today's games except there are frame rate T
stutters when you're riding the chairlift and looking around at the whole mountain. The frame rate is good when it actually matters.

The game starts you off with a crappy board and you have to earn cash to buy better ones for ridiculous prices. Just hold out for a mid grade board and once you upgrade you'll start to really feel what this game is like. Once you u have one of the best level boards, the game gets even better. It's a shame they don't at least tease you with how good the controls feel with a real board because some people will simply give up before they get a good board. So give the game a chance and it will grow on you.

I couldn't agree more with Justin. I too have been snowboarding for over a decade, having instructed and competed along the way, and this game couldn't have done a better job MISSING the snowboarding experience. Most reviews have been spot on--the controls are atrocious. Sure, graphics are good, as is the equipment selection, but the frustration you'll encounter trying to control your rider will trump anything redeeming about this game.

Oh, and mellowspaz, you think it's great that there aren't any fake tricks and that the rodeo 360 is very satisfying? A quick lesson in a sport you've obviously had little or no experience with: There is NO such thing as a rodeo 360. A rodeo 540 is a backflip with a 180. 540-180=360, thus, this said "rodeo 360" is what we riders like to call a "backflip," just maybe a little off axis. Did Justin hit the nail on the head? Do you work for Ubisoft?

So, overall, I can't recommend this game as a snowboarder OR a gamer. Feel free to rent it and see for yourself, but don't expect much (unless you like the idea of having to push forward at all times and ollie with the right tigger).

I say we lobby that the boys who put together skate make a snowboard game. After a couple of hours of Shaun White frustration, it went back in the rental box, and skate went right back into the xbox.

mellowspaz must work for ubisoft. Gamespot gave this game a 5/10 even though they couldn't find anything good thing to say about. Unlike mellowspaz, I have been riding for 16 years, I have been instructing for several years, have won several freestyle contests, and i don't work for ubisoft. This is a sad excuse for any type of game. It is not fun at all. I also noticed that mellowspaz has reviewed 2 games that he reviewed....this and the wii version...coincidence? It isn't even worth renting....oh yeah, i want a realistic snowboarding game too....this isn't it. The most important aspect of snowboarding is flow, and this game has none. Your better off playing Candyland with your little sister.

Shaun White is seems like such a cool guy and role-model for snowboarders like myself...however his video game has way to many ups and downs. I heard this game was supposed to be revolutionary and some parts were. I loved the views on the game it made you felt like you were actully on the mountian, i also liked the locations, character custimization, and cameos by shaun white. But this game definatly has its flaws the graphics look great from a distance but suck when you look at them up-close, the game moves in such a way that you rarly crash like you normally do when your boarding you take a non-realistic fall and are up on your feet in about a second. The controls are extremly frusturating and should have used a different engine or should have been customizable. Another thing is the jumps they seem way to awkward when you go off of them and you can rarley get enough air to do any sweet tricks...This game is hard to rate because it appers great but has a ton of minor flaws in the system...

As a snowboarder I love this game. Like the other post said if you are looking for an SSX style of game you will be disapointed. This game has what I always wanted out of the SSX game. Hit up Alaska area if you get this game, long runs and lots of extras.
