Product Description: Get behind the driver's seat with this Speed Racer based on the Wachowski Brothers film with its garage of combat-ready rides and see how you fare in "car-fu style" action. Take on the role of the characters from the film, getting behind the wheels of each character's signature vehicles to experience firsthand the film's high adrenaline, combative racing style. The film itself is based on the classic series created by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida. A live-action family adventure, Speed Racer follows the young racecar driver Speed in his quest for glory on and off the track in his thundering Mach 5. Choose between three different variations of the Mach 5, each one equipped with several gadgets that are unique to the car like grip tires, rotary saws, a periscope, a deflector, and auto jacks. All of the gadgets have a specific purpose. The rotary saws are used to cut down any trees that get in the way. By activating the auto jacks, the Mach 5 can jump over obstacles to discover shortcuts. Discovering the shortcuts is the key to getting the fastest times on all three tracks and mastering the Normal and Endurance modes. If you play the game well enough, you will be able to unlock new vehicles, including Racer X. Get behind the wheel and go, SPEED RACER, go!

Rating: - LOVED this game.
I read a lot of reviews for this game before buying it and I must say that I had very high hopes. I was not let down in the least. This game was amazing fun. I still have my friends come over and play it even though we beat it. It took a lot of diligence to get through the entire game as some of the races were very hard. However, there are some key quirks to the game that a lot of reviewers don't seem to get. It's true that the enemies will attack you and throw your game off, but they are WAY more prone to do it if you attack them. These guys and gals are quite vengeful. Also, you are less likely to be attacked when you are nearer to the crown so save your turbo boosts for when you are on the outer edges of the tracks to prevent attacks. This game is a ton of fun and can get really physical if you turn out to be a more aggressive driver. All ages can enjoy it and I think it's well worth the money.
Rating: - What a good time.
This game is a lot of fun. I played my grandsons, and said "I've got to buy this game." It is well worth $20.00. No disappointments here. It will take you sometime to get through all the courses, and then mastering the variety of moves such as CAR-FU makes it very challenging.
Rating: - Great Arcade-Style Futuristic Racing Game; Fun For Everyone
Speed Racer was a great cartoon series, and a great movie, but as a long-time car racing video game fan, I hardly expected a great racing game. I was wrong. This thing puts all of my other Wii games on the back burner, completely. For me, it is tied with GT3 on the PS2, and Pole Position on the old Atari 5200, as my all-time favorites for their respective time periods.
Currently, I've tried Grid, Forza, Prologue, etc., and this is more fun, for me. If your thing is serious, realistic, NASCAR-style racing, this is not that. In fact, it's the exact opposite. But it's a blast, easy to get into, and challenging enough for most players.
It's got the movie's racing moves down, the spectacular CGI racing environments are nailed, the arcade-style racing dynamics work really well, and they even got the characters' dialog right, adding a lot to the single-player mode. I don't know if Nintendo has an exclusive with the Wachowskis, but if this game is properly adapted to a super-console, watch out!
I have noticed some racing games that are fun on other consoles are poorly ported to the Wii's motion-sensitive wireless controllers. Hot Wheels Beat That!, for example, is great on the xBox 360 but sucks on the Wii for that reason. I use Nintendo's $10 steering wheel with the controler, and it works great on this game.

So... Speed Racer for the Wii... it's actually great! I was skeptical when it only allowed for the sideways wiimote 'steering wheel' style controls, but they actually work great! Your car slides around the tracks so much anyway, accurate driving is not as important as sheer speed.
A big part of the game is the 'car-fu' aspect... battling the other drivers physically with your car. You can do flips, back flips, jumps, 180 spins, 360 spins, side swipes, corkscrew jumps, etc. lots of moves, and they add up as combos as you're hitting different vehicles. This is a lot of fun when you're packed in tight during a close race. It's almost disappointing when you're doing well and end up ahead of the pack, as there is no one to fight!
Successful attacks will not only gain you a physical lead, but also give you a bit of boost. When your boost gauge is full, you can boost (duh), or you can swap some of the boost to repair your vehicle. Since you can only boost when the bar is full, using boosts and doing repairs becomes much more of a strategical aspect than in most driving games that feature nitro.
There are also 'rivals' and 'alliances'. Certain racers who will hunt you down, or specifically help you out or leave you alone. If you attack neutral characters, they may become rivals, as well as if you hurt allies. You can choose to abandon alliances before the race, or offer to form an alliance as well.
The graphics are very pretty and have the same bright, saturated look the film does. The tracks have lots of loops, curves and jumps to keep them interesting. Think F-Zero, but more forgiving. You rarely need to lay into a curve to come out successfully, so you can just focus on speed and having fun. It's still a challenge though, as the other racers have their own boosts and attacks.
There are loads of unlockable characters and tracks for added replay. I was surprised how differently each driver felt. They are rated by the typical 'speed', 'acceleration', 'handling', etc. of most driving games, but they actually represent a real difference. This is similar to Mario Kart in that each driver really does feel unique.
Overall, an overlooked gem. The recent PS2 port is said to have even more tracks and characters, so it might be worth a wait, but the Wii controls really shine with this racer.
