Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Nino
Chrono Trigger was definatley one of the best rpgs of all time I remember playing this game way back in august of 1995 it keep hooked from start to finish. The game follows the story of a young man name chrono who travels the world through six different time periods which was one awesome feature besides the fact that once the game is beaten you can go back and try to get 15 different endings of course being that the game is 13 years old it has all the old school rpg aspects you would expect buying weapons and armors leveling up earning new skills through tech points gaining 5 other new allys plus an optional one overall I found no weak point to this game and being that it is coming to the nintendo ds this december you should do yourself a favor and buy this classic game if you crave old school rpgs

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - It's about time
There are many who feel that Chrono Trigger is the greatest game ever made. Certainly it is one of the greatest RPGs ever made, in my own experience equaled only perhaps by Final Fantasy VII (never did care for any other Final Fantasy games). It's a rolicking-good-time for fans of adventure and sci-fi, and as RPGs go a whole lot of fun. More than that, the genius of its design and brilliance of its story is not debatable. It's legendary. Even better, it makes for a game that's fun!

When I first started the game I was wondering exactly how the game would make me feel. I like the deep story of RPGs, but hate dungeon crawling, random battles, and that very irritating feeling of having absolutely no idea where to go next to get the story moving again. I need not have feared, though. Chrono trigger has no random battles, it's castles and dungeons are brief not every-lasting, and thankfully, you will always know where to go next.

The story starts with you in your village on the day of the millenial fair, and you quickly meet a girl there and (using your friend's new teleportation machine) find the girl gone and yourself back in time trying to rescue a queen who has been kidnapped (and who your friend has been mistaken for because {surprise, surprise} she is the crown princess and the descent of that queen. You have some adventures come back to your time, get put on trial for kidnapping the princess, and see one of the greatest scenes in any videogame ever, as all your actions in the first hour of the game are played back as evidence against or for you. Eventually you get out of that situation (one way or another) and find yourself again traveling through time, only to find that the world was destroyed by a monster far in the future, unless you can stop it...

The prologue is awesome but the main story of the game is really amazing. You have all the classic trapping of a great legend, from a hero turned into an animal, to an ancient sword that has to be reforged, to a princess and an unlikely hero out to save the world. That's enough to make a good game. What propels Chrono Trigger into greatness is the power the story is given by the strength of the characters and writing, and absolutely fantastic presentation and gameplay. The game is loaded with humor character, from the little girl accusing you of not rescuing her cat at the trial, to a tiny furry creature who is the master magician (and keeps popping up in different times doing everything from hiking on the mountain of monsters to playing rag-time on the piano in an inn), from the goblins who wonder why you just popped out of a time portal in their closet to the Frog who talks in noble Shakesparian and the cute robot you find in the future. There were so many times when I played this game and felt real joy in the moments it presented. When I first discovered the robot in the future and his theme played, I felt attached to him instantly (he's so cuuuute), and when the hero frog leapt off saying he had failed to protect the queen, I felt so bad for him (he was really handy with sword and saved by bacon). That's the kind of thing that gets to you. I haven't felt that way about an RPG since Xenosaga's Cyborg said "Call me Ziggy", and Final Fantasy VII had girls asking a certain brooding hero whether he remembered his promise or would be their bodyguard.

It cannot be overstated how much the lack of random battles, and the constant boss battles (which you will almost always win) increase the amount of fun you have with this game. The excellent battle system which highly encourages teamwork amoung your party keeps you constantly on your toes and nervous that you could lose the battle, and never gets tedious or frustrating. The graphics may be old-school, but that about as good sprite-based graphics get. The music is very atmospheric and catchy, and the main themes are just beautiful. The story twists and turns, and how you play can determine the way certain events unfold (the game has more than one ending and you can even play past the "end"). But above all, the story and characters are just impossible not to love if you like a good story. If you like RPGs and don't mind if they're a little old, you will LOVE this game.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - THE BEST GAME I EVER PLAYED
Just because you've played Final Fantasy VII(Playstation) or The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion(Xbox 360,Playstation 3, PC), that doesn't make you a true RPG gamer until you play Chrono Trigger. I like this game better than Final Fantasy II, III, and Mystic Quest on my SNES simply because it plays better, it's more accessible to the RPG-impared, and there aren't very many random encounters. I never figured this game would end up being #1 on my top ten favorite games list(especially since it's surrounded by shooters, and loads of other genres that don't include the RPG genre), but somehow won over me and I grew to love this game with a passion because it's so f***ing amazing. I have never experienced a game this epic before in my life, which is another reason why you must buy this game(Either for SNES or PS1). And like the fans of Final Fantasy VII demanding a remake of the game for PS3 and 360, Chrono fans demand a remake of the series for the same platforms(With maybe the possibility of releasing Chrono Break). Come on Square Enix, what the hell are you waiting for ?!

All the rpg games now-a-days started from this.. great fightingstyle.. great story that starts out wit chrono and marle as she dissappears back in time to 600 ad.. as you try to save the world from the almighty lavos, you are joined by other characters.. first game that uses combos specials wit fluency.. i definitely recommend this game.. this game is very rare..

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best RPG I have ever played!!
Since I was very young, I played the first Final Fantasy for Nintendo. It was a bit corny at the time (since Super Nintendo was already released) but I enjoyed it a lot. I have played almost every Square RPG released. Even after all of them, including Final Fantasy 7, Chrono Trigger is still the greatest game I have ever played.
The main character in the game is YOU. YOU are Crono, many people thought he was mute, but in the game you talk for him. The depth of the ALL characters are amazing. The dialogue was superb.
I personally don't think any other game has a plot better than this one. Crono's death was far more moving that the death of Aeris in Final Fantasy 7 (although that part was pretty sad!). Bottom line, even by today's standards, the story is incredible.
Unlike many other RPG's, even the smallest action could lead to a different ending. Depending on what you choose to say or do, the outcome can be different. The ending for Chrono Trigger is the best game ending I have ever seen!! Not to mention there's over a dozen endings.
Another great feature, the fighting engine. It's not like the "random battle" fighting engine that always aggravated me Final Fantasy. You can actually see the enemy before the attack you. In some parts of the game, you can even do stealth kills (when Crono is put in jail, when the team is captured in the Airship in 12000 B.C.). Also, each character had their own specific abilities. It made them all unique, which was great. I much prefer this idea over the whole "materia" concept. And the team actually works as a TEAM!! There are magical AND physical skills than uses two or even three members of the team working together. If you have a game with a lot of characters fighting together, doesn't it make sense for them to work together?
This is the most under rated game ever made. It was quite popular in Japan, mainly because the creator of Dragon Ball Z (which was still hot at the time and not in North America yet) had a big part in the game. If you decide to play it now, the Playstation version is ok, since it has cool video made by the great Toriyama (creator of Dragon Ball Z). The graphics are lousy, but way ahead of it's time considering the age of this game.
Too bad Square Enix, or whatever the hell they're called now, has no plans to do anything with this franchise. Seems all they can do is ruin them. This game was royally screwed over with its less than worthy sequel Chrono Cross, which I never intend to play. I tried once, once is enough.

I know most people first RPG experience from Squaresoft was probably Final Fantasy 7. Compared to Chrono Trigger, FF7 is weak, VERY weak. Final Fantasy 6 was the greatest of the series, period. And Chrono Trigger was the greatest game ever made!
