A downright creepy "survival horror" title, Silent Hill succeeds where most Resident Evil-inspired titles suck: keeping you hooked and instilling you with fear throughout the game. Players are cast as Harry Mason in his desperate search for his daughter, who mysteriously disappeared after their car crashed into a gully outside of a desolate resort town.

The 3-D environments in Silent Hill are bathed in fog or darkness, making its dismal setting all the more eerie; this also allows for some spectacular lighting effects when using a flashlight in the dark. Granted, there are some pretty coarse graphics being obscured here, but it's a fair trade-off, considering the game's short load times.

Silent Hill is played from a third-person perspective, viewed from both fixed and moving camera angles. As with similar games, the viewpoint can be awkward at times, especially during combat, which here is so clunky that you should try to avoid it whenever possible--something you should do anyway, as this isn't Tomb Raider.

Rather than resort to cheap scare tactics, Silent Hill features a gameplay twist that works very well with its limited visibility environments. Harry carries a radio with him that crackles with static whenever the game's nasties are near, and continues until they're no longer in the vicinity or have been killed off. (Enemies may require further whacking when they're down, as they like to play dead.) Additionally, the supported Dual-Shock controller pulsates in a heartbeatlike fashion whenever you're moderately or seriously injured. --Joe Hon

Ahhh, my favorite game ever.

Don't miss out on this lovely gem.

Expensive, but worth it!

You'll love this game. A cult classic, to be sure...soon enough, you too will have a new fondness for radios, flashlights, steel pipes and sirens.

It has a surprisingly large environment given that it's such an old game. Lots of levels, lots of detail, lots of story, lots of monster, lots o' stuff, that's for sure. It's a bit of a pain to get used to moving around, but you'll get used to it. We're just so spoiled by this intuitive new-gen games. ;)



I inherited my original copy from a neighbor, and I was lucky enough to stumble across a brand new copy in a used records, dvd and game store to replace my horribly scratched one for only 20 bucks.

Having said that, I would definitely recommend looking around in pawn shops in your town before buying this online. >_>

This is probably one of my favorite games. The fact that it became a huge blockbuster movie comes as no surprise to me. Great storyline, intriguing characters and scenarios and not to mention the realilstic touches to what could actually happen in real life depicted via Sony's interpretation. I would recommend this game to anybody that likes problem solving and puzzles. There are several points in the game where you have to solve puzzles or some kind of equation to get ahead. You would play the daughter's father who is looking for his daughter in Silent Hill as they had crashed and she had disappeared. Definently recommend this game, hope you like it as much as I did and still do.

Silent Hill. Is. Still. Scary. When I first played this game I didn't really care for it. I didn't really care for Silent Hill until I played the fourth one. Now I love it! I have all the Silent Hill games and this one is still great. In the world of HD crap, if a playstation one game can still scare you with its inferior graphics its still realy good. Mabye that is why its so expensive. Buy it. Period.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Major step forward for games as an art form
The story in this game (and all Silent Hill games for that matter) is phenomenal. Games like this are the ones that will help video gaming evolve as an artistic medium like books and film, rather than being seen as toys.
Here's a brief description for anyone reading this that doesn't know about Silent Hill (all 2 of you...); you play as a normal guy (not a military commando) that is driving along one minute and then, after nearly crashing, finds himself in Silent Hill where strange and hostile creatures roam the otherwise deserted town. And if that wasn't enough, his daughter is missing.
As the game progresses you will occasionally hear an alarm siren and the town will turn dark and shift from Silent Hill to Otherworld, where there are more monsters and the atmosphere is even more frightening and depressing.
There are multiple endings to keep you playing, and as mentioned the story is spot on so despite slightly frustrating combat and camera issues I recommend playing this game because there is nothing quite like the experience of a Silent Hill story.
